I am a 24 year old student at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I first saw Deb on VH-1 when I caught the last half of the "Only In My Dreams" video. I liked the song well enough that I bought OOTB the next day, but I didn't become a big fan 'til I saw her doing a veejay stint on MTV. I was very impressed by her personality and then when they played the video to "Out Of The Blue," I knew I was hooked. Like a lot of you I get a lot of static from my friends about liking Ms. Gibson but I have no problems dealing with it (in fact it drives my friends nuts when I go out with them wearing a Debbie G. t-shirt). I have found very few Deb fans here in Arkansas (surprise) but there are a few. I am also a amateur songwriter (not in Deb's league for sure) and I have a simple but effective MIDI setup in my house. My skills as a lyricist are uneven at best. I go from a complete writers block to a huge burst of inspiration and then back to being stumped for another week . I keep hoping that Deb will come to Little Rock on tour someday, but so far the closest she has been is Memphis, Tennessee (close but not THAT close). I have decided that I am going to the next one there even if I have to crawl there. My greatest dream would be for Deborah to actually record one of my songs but I know that that is unlikely in the extreme (hey can't blame a guy for dreaming). Jim Cook D.G.I.F. # 540 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= INTRO BY ANDRE LEBLANC =- Andre LeBlanc (Fargo, North Dakota) June 2, 1992 Hello. I suppose it's time I introduce myself. My name is Andre LeBlanc, and I am a 20 year old Psychology major at Moorhead State University (Moorhead, Minnesota - not to be confused with the one in Kentucky). My first experience with Debbie's music was in July 1987, when I saw the video for "Only in My Dreams" on VH-1. I was immediately taken in by the girl's energy and overall singing ability. I was even more impressed to find out she was only 16, and wrote all her own music. A short while later, I saw her perform "Only in My Dreams" and "Shake Your Love" on the TV program - "Live: From the Palace." Wow! Her performance blew me away. No other performer has had that kind of impact on me before (not even Bruce Springsteen, my other favorite). She was talented, beautiful, and seemed to have a wholesome, down to earth image (something very rare in the music business). I immediately went out searching for her LP, and had little trouble finding it at a local Musicland (I didn't have a CD player at the time). I've been a devoted fan ever since. Unfortunately, I didn't join D.G.I.F. until 1989 (after EY was released). I had joined quite a few fan clubs in the mid-80's, and most of which sent out nothing more than a button and a one or two page newsletter every 6 months. I assumed D.G.I.F. was no different, and would not be worth my money. However, by 1989, my fan status overpowered my urge not to join. Now, I truly regret not joining sooner. Anyway, my number is 6648. In July 1991, I first signed on to the Prodigy interactive service, and have been an active member in Debbie discussion ever since. Unfortunately, it is the only B.B. system I have access to. I heard about BtL somewhere through Prodigy (don't remember exactly where), but later started receiving the issues through U.S. Mail (thanks to Myra Wong). Recently Bob MacDowell was kind enough to send me all the back issues on disc, and I have been busy reading through them all. It is a wonderful publication, and you should all be complimented on a job well done! The main radio station I listen to (Q-98) concentrates on classic/album rock, but I do listen to other genres as well. Besides Debbie Gibson and Bruce Springsteen, some of my other favorites are: The Eagles, Wilson Phillips, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Garth Brooks, ZZ Top, Journey, Expose, Taylor Dayne, CCR, Led Zeppelin (a lot of stuff from the 70's), Billy Joel, Elton John, Cheap Trick, etc, etc. Anyways, thanks for reading my story, and drop me a line if you get a chance. I'd love to hear from you! My favorite Debbie songs are: "No More Rhyme," "Out of the Blue," "Shake Your Love," "Try," "Lost In Your Eyes," "Sure," and "So Close to Forever." I have been reading Between the Lines since the last week of March. On June 15th, I celebrated my 26th birthday. I am finishing a Master's Degree in Computer Science at Pace University, which is just a few blocks from where I work as an Office Automation Clerk for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in downtown Manhattan, New York. I live with my parents and my sister in Valley Stream, Long Island, New York, which is just a few stops east of Merrick (Debbie home base) on the Babylon-Montauk line of the Long Island Rail Road. Just an aside, the Babylon-Montauk line also has a stop at Rockville Center (Taylor Dayne) and at Bay Shore (Billy Joel). All this music just a few stops away, and I still can't seem to bump into any of them. I first heard Debbie Gibson in the summer of 1987. It was a very unpleasant time for me. I had no job, I was not on a vacation, and I was not even going to summer classes at my undergraduate school, SUNY at Stony Brook, New York. I found myself doing almost nothing but feeling sorry for myself. Then, I saw "Only in my Dreams" on Music Television. Then my problems, though they did not disappear, somehow felt less intolerable. I experienced another dose of Debbie magic in the spring of 1988. I was trying to write a computer program, but I was not getting anywhere. I took some pencils and some paper to a campus cafe, The Golden Bear (then recently reopened). I thought that the change of atmosphere would do me well. There was a jukebox there. I had enough change to play a few tunes. After playing "Mack the Knife" (B. Darin), "Faith" (G. Michael), and others, I was starting to get some notions of the program. Then it finally got around to playing "Out of the Blue," and the pieces of the program rapidly fell into place. Religious experience? Maybe, but I am not a religious person. I would probably call it an emotional movement which led to a logical coup. Since then, I have not had quite as potent a dose of Debbie magic, but that does not mean that I did not like her songs. Quite the contrary! Debbie's songs have been consistent members of my personal re-playlist. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= IS SHE DEBBIE OR DEBORAH? =- Chris Backa (CSC3CSB@HOFSTRA.BITNET) June 8, 1992 [Copied verbatim without permission from Newsday 6/8/92] >From Liz Smith's syndicated gossip column: REMEMBER DEBBIE Gibson? Well, she no longer exists. It's "Deborah Gibson" now, and the former teen music queen is forging ahead with her adult career. Deborah recently completed a successful run on Broadway in "Les Miserables." She'll soon release her fourth album - showcasing her new maturity. And there may even be another top Broadway musical role in her future. Of course the most delicious carrot tempting Gibson is the movies. Two studios are dangling film offers. But she's weighing those choices carefully. Music stars in movies are a species that often become extinct. Vanilla Ice, anyone? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= D.G.I.F. PETITION UPDATE =- Shaun Stuart (XSSTUART@FULLERTON.EDU) June 15, 1992 In the previous issue of BtL, I asked people to send me a petition which I would forward to D.G.I.F. in an attempt to get better service from them. Thanks to the few people who responded, I was able to put together a decent sized response (although I had hoped for a bigger showing). Eighteen people returned their petitions. On Monday, June 15th, I mailed them to Janet Conigliaro, the Fan Club Coordinator. I have compiled the results and they are in order of most to least responses: - When Deborah is on tour, send out tour schedules via first class mail sufficiently in advance of the concert dates (whenever possible) to be useful. 18/18 100% of respondents - Whenever possible, notify members in advance of Deborah's local appearances via a postcard sent first class mail. For example, if Deborah is appearing on a show like Hanging With Hollywood in Los Angeles, send postcards to members in the Southern California area in advance of the performance. 17/18 94% of respondents - Refrain from including long stories solely about other artists who have no connection to Debbie Gibson. 16/18 89% of respondents - Mail D.G.I.F. magazines to U.S. members via first or second class (magazine rate) mail. 15/18 83% of respondents - Resume printing at least some photos in the D.G.I.F. magazine in full color. 15/18 83% of respondents - Improve the response time of letters and questions sent to D.G.I.F. concerning administrative problems. 12/18 67% of respondents Average price respondents were willing to pay for these benefits: $20.00 / year I'll let you know if I get any kind of response. [Editor's Note: Shaun sent the petitions via certified mail. The domestic return receipt was signed so D.G.I.F. got them.] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= "IN HIS MIND" JAPANESE CD-SINGLE =- Felix Ng (A1430001@BCIT.BITNET) June 27, 1992 WEA AMDY-5076 (In His Mind) 02/25/92 Value: $10 Tracks: 1) In His Mind (3:36) 2) One Hand, One Heart (4:36) On the front of the CD-3 is a picture of a short haired Debbie wearing a purple tank top. A different pose of this picture is in the OSA tourbook. The lyrics for the two tracks are on the back. According to a BtL member, this single was released because a Japanese TV drama was using the song. The sound quality, in comparison with the US AIP CD, seems to be better. The highs sound clearer and there is less hiss. Although the two tracks are no different from the album, you should still consider adding this CD-3 to your collection. Like the single "Without You," this CD-3 can only be obtained in Japan or an import store since it was only released there. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= "ONE HAND, ONE HEART" VIDEO =- Matthew Jung (mjung@rosarita.ucdavis.edu) June 24, 1992 About one year ago, the "One Hand, One Heart" video was completed. It is a shame that it still hasn't been shown in the North American continent yet. But rest assured, Deborah said it would appear on the next home videotape when I asked her about it in January. When Deborah was asked about the video on a Japanese TV show, she described it as having a feeling of summer. Indeed it does and the concept she uses to evoke this feeling is by using filters to emphasis bright white light for most of the video. The setting also helps too because Deb is walking alone on the beach on a hot summer day singing in most scenes or sitting at the piano playing. Another way to describe the video is that Deb appears to be in heaven. Unfortunately, the bright light concept is terrible from a technical point of view. The problem is that the NTSC standard used in North America and Japan uses a screen refresh rate of 60 Hz. To make matters worse, the frames are interlaced meaning it takes two complete cycles to draw a picture. This means you are really seeing the picture at 30 frames per second. This is fine for movement since it is beyond the threshold necessary to perceive motion, but there is a side effect with pure white light. The problem is that with pure white light, you notice the picture flicker. For most people, the picture has to be refreshed at least 70 Hz before the flicker goes away. Since the video was shot in bright white light, the flickering problem becomes very noticeable throughout the video. This isn't the first video that has technical problems. In the "This So-Called Miracle" video, the 90's portion has Deb in a bright red outfit. The problem with NTSC video is that red bleeds and it looks awful on the screen. It appears that Deborah has creative ideas for her videos, but she doesn't understand the technology and can't anticipate problems that might appear in the finished product. Fortunately, not all of the video was shot in the bright white light. There are a few brief segments throughout the video where Deb appears in a swimming pool with a guy. The guy obviously is the love interest in the storyline. Those scenes were shot and edited in such a way where you can tell the girl in the pool was Deb, but the identity of the guy isn't so clear. The guy definitely doesn't appear to be any of the guys that Deb has used in her previous videos (John Gallagher, Herby Sanchez), but from the eyebrows, it appears that he could be Chris Cuevas. The "One Hand, One Heart" video has some interesting ideas, but it isn't anything spectacular. Even if it was good, you'd probably get a headache from watching it due to the flicker. The year 1991 wasn't the best year for Debbie Gibson videos, but you will get to judge for yourself if the next home video is released concurrently with the album this fall. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK TELETHON =- Sara Gauchat (Hudson, Ohio) June 5, 1992 I think that it's safe to say that I was not the only person whose jaw dropped a few feet when I first saw Deborah on the Children's Miracle Network Telethon. My first reaction to seeing her new, brown hair style was, "Oh my God, it's Diane!" Obviously the shock wasn't from her hair style, but from the color. I mean, everybody knew that Deb dyed her hair blond (it's pretty obvious from the pictures of her when she was younger with dark _brown_ hair), but it was still a surprise. But, after watching it several times, I more or less got used to it, and it does look cute on her. I thought "On My Own," which she finally sang the entire song of, was great - the best of all the TV shows she has sung it on. "Anything Is Possible" was pretty good, but her vocals sounded a little murky at the beginning. I would like to know what happened to Herby, and who the three dancers were? It was good to still see Buddy, Jade, and Ray. Chris Cuevas's performance of "You Are the One" was also well done. It went over well with the audience, which was a good thing for him. I hope that Deborah continues to do this telethon each year, because I really enjoy seeing her on it and her performances on it are great. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= LIVE AT THE CMN TELETHON =- Myra Wong (mkwong@sdcc13.ucsd.edu) June 30, 1992 On Saturday, May 30th, Debbie Gibson performed live at Disneyland as part of the weekend long Children's Miracle Network Telethon. In the past, Deborah has participated in this telethon many times. In 1988, she performed "Out of the Blue" and "Foolish Beat" at Disney World, back when it was called Celebrate the Miracles. In 1989, they replayed her "Foolish Beat" performance from the previous year. Last year, 1991, Deborah performed "One Step Ahead" and "One Hand, One Heart" on the first day, plus a "One Hand, One Heart" encore on the second day. Hopefully she will continue to perform on the Children's Miracle Network Telethon for many years to come. Fellow BtL member Shaun Stuart and I arrived at Disneyland's open air stage, Videopolis, at about 2:30 P.M. We met a few other Debbie Gibson fans who we had previously known plus some new people (including a pair from Australia who were visiting the United States and wanted to see Deb in Les Miserables but were too late - so they came here instead). We were told that we would be let into the seating area about one or two hours before the telethon was to start. During our long wait, we managed to ask one of the coordinators who had a schedule when Deborah would be appearing in the line up. It turned out that she would be performing in the second and third hours of the telethon. We stood outside for about three hours, surrounded by Osmond fans (whose fan club had sent out notices about the telethon - Donny performed and Marie co-hosted). We were let in at 5:30 P.M. and the telethon started at 6 P.M. While waiting for the telethon to begin, I spotted a few of Debbie's dancers (Buddy, Jade, and Ray) looking for someone in the audience. A few minutes later, I saw Buddy in the audience, a few rows up, talking to Herby Sanchez (another dancer). One of the fans I had met knew Herby so she went and talked to him. He said Debbie would be doing "On My Own," "Anything Is Possible," and maybe "Only In My Dreams." After a while, I saw Diane and another female Gibson appear (we were pretty far away). At first, I swore it was Denise because of the dark hair, but then the girl smiled. No one has a smile like Debbie! The way the telethon schedule worked was, they'd do 40 minutes of live broadcasting, then have a 20 minute break (for local broadcasting) during which the acts appearing in the next hour would rehearse. During the break before the second hour, Deb came out and rehearsed with a pianist for "On My Own." She was wearing blue jeans with a gold lettered 'LOVE' on the left leg, and a white shirt under a khaki long-sleeved blazer that looked good with her new hair color. I could see and hear her giving sound check instructions (like she does in the LIYE part of the _Live Around The World_ videotape). Surprisingly, they had turned the speakers on so that everyone in the audience could hear the rehearsal. Hence, we heard "On My Own" twice. Larry and Billy Watson (two very artistic fans) had made another banner like they had for Hangin' With Hollywood. It was white paint on black cloth and had a perfect replica of Deborah as "Eponine" from the cover of D.G.I.F. 4.2. It also said "Les Miserables, the world's longest running musical - featuring Debbie Gibson." While she was rehearsing, we got ready to hold it up. When she was done singing, we applauded and I gave her the thumbs up sign, which she responded with a smile. Then we all yelled her name and quickly held up the banner for her to see. I think she was impressed. Then I did a rather silly gesture - I held up my D.G.I.F. bear, and she smiled at that too. A little bit later, after she finished giving the pianist instructions and left the stage, she motioned to us to hold up the banner for her to see. Little did we know that she was going to take a picture of it! She kept telling us that we needed to raise it higher! I thought that was humorous. After she took a picture of the banner, she snapped another picture of us. (Maybe we'll be in the next D.G.I.F.!) On a side note, Diane was taking a lot of pictures of Debbie posing with other celebrities. During the second hour, Debbie came out from backstage to wait for her turn to perform. Now she was wearing dressy black pants with a matching blazer over a checker bustier. She talked a little to her dancers who were on the sidelines to cheer her on. She then performed "On My Own" for the live telecast. I was so relieved to hear her sing the song in its entirety. After the performance, she went backstage again. During the next 20 minute break, Deb came out again to rehearse "Anything Is Possible" with her six dancers. She was still wearing what she wore for her performance of "On My Own." Again, she did a bit of sound check and rehearsed all the dance steps. At this time, I had moved to the front of the audience and was standing up to watch her rehearse. Out of habit, when the track was played over the sound system, I started to sing along (or rather, mouth the words). At one point, Debbie saw me doing this and smiled. That's one thing that is hard to do at a concert - get her attention by just singing along! Deb then went backstage to get ready for her performance. During the third hour, Deb came out and waited with her dancers. She was wearing black tights, and a matching colored-striped blazer and shorts. During the Fifth Dimension's performance, I could see Debbie hamming it up with her dancers. She was pretending that she was singing and then gestured "Oh - it's not my turn to sing!" Then Debbie and her six male dancers performed "Anything Is Possible." I liked how they had changed a lot of the dance moves since the One Step Ahead tour. Debbie went backstage again after this performance, but came out during the next break to take some publicity pictures with children from the Children's Miracle Network organization. We called out her name numerous times. She kept gesturing to us "Just one minute." After a while, she sent a volunteer lady into the audience to get stuff for Debbie to autograph since it didn't seem like a good idea for her to come up to the audience. I gave the lady an 8x10 photo of Deb and me and the 1992 calendar to autograph. I also gave her the last three issues of BtL(4.4-4.6) for Debbie to keep. Little did I know that 10 minutes later, Debbie would indeed come up to the edge of the audience to sign autographs. She worked her way down the line. I suddenly realized I didn't have anything for her to sign. So I asked Shaun to hand me my D.G.I.F. bear. When it was my turn, I handed her an invitation to Shaun's graduation party (which she nearly autographed by mistake) then I handed her my bear to sign (on the back of the t-shirt). She continued to sign autographs while people asked her questions about the new album, which she is "still working on" and will "probably be out in the fall." One of the people in our group suggested a west coast listening party for the new album. I backed up the idea. She said she'd think about it! Someone else asked if she would be performing anymore, and she replied, "No, I'm done." The Australian fan asked her if she was going to tour his country. She took about two pictures with some fans and signed a few more autographs before going. That was the last I saw of her. I was ready to leave, but then I remembered that I had given that lady those things to take backstage. I was so worried that she might not come back - that my 1992 calendar would be gone forever! It took a while, but eventually she returned. Deborah had autographed my 8x10 photo "To Myra, [heart]Debbie Gibson" since I had attached a note with my name. The BtLs were gone, but on that note were some scribble marks which looked like she was trying to start the pen. Last of all, the 1992 calendar read "Matthew, Happy birthday! [heart] Debbie Gibson." After all, it was May 30th, our long-standing, hard-working moderator's 23rd birthday. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS =- Q. Rolando Vinluan (rvinluan@cs.cornell.edu) I wanted to buy the _Out of the Blue_ CD, as my cassette is worn out. However, I noticed that "Between the Lines" isn't listed in the back. Is this is a misprint, or do I really have to buy the cassette again? BtL is one of her best songs...not to mention *our* mailing list title...and it'd be a real pity if it's not on the CD version. A. Matthew Jung (mjung@rosarita.ucdavis.edu) Fortunately, it is only a misprint. "Between the Lines" is the very last track on the _Out of the Blue_ CD (same as the cassette and lp versions). Q. Ray Wilmott (wilmott@remus.rutgers.edu) On page 31 of Between The Lines is Debbie's resume at age 12. Among things listed are television appearances for Live From The Met ("Hansel and Gretel" and "La Boheme"). Anybody happen to have these on tape, or know where one might obtain them? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= CLOSING REMARKS =- Debbie is now an Aunt! According to the June 6th issue of Billboard, Karen Gibson Lampiasi (Deb's eldest sister) had a baby girl on May 15th named Diana Joanne. Karen was also listed as being the vice president of GPI. Depending on how many submissions we get, we may skip the July BtL issue. If this is the case, then we will save whatever submissions we get in July for the August issue.
