On July 26-28 Debbie performed at the Sands Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Back in mid-June I heard about the shows and immediately ordered tickets for Sunday night's show. A month later, I heard tickets were still available so I decided to also go to the Friday performance. Here are the details... The Copa Room ------------- The room that Debbie played was pretty much the perfect size to see her show in. I guestimate seating at about 1,000. What this means is that unlike the big arenas she played in during the Electric Youth tour, there really are no horrible seats...even from the back row you can see the stage pretty well. Happily though, I didn't have to worry about the view from the back. Friday night I ended up with third row seats on the far left side of the stage. Sunday night I had front row, a little to the right side of the stage (close enough for Deb to shake the sweat out of her hair and onto me...that's okay, I didn't mind :-) Ah the wonders of general admission as opposed to assigned seating. Merchandising ------------- There wasn't much. 2 different shirts, and the tour book was about it. I picked up a tour book. 24 pages of photos and info...not bad, not great. It contains a few photos from the recent Japanese leg of the tour. [Editor's Note: The tour book costs $15 - be sure to bring enough money!] The Show (7/26/91) ------------------ Chris Cuevas opened for Deborah, playing 3 songs and finishing with Hip Hop. Then out came Deb wearing a blue-sequined outfit and singing One Step Ahead. Buddy and the other 3 dancers put on a good show and got things off to a hot start. Deb took to the piano next for Another Brick Falls, which sounded really good performed live. Then came "stripped down" (Deb's words) versions of Shake Your Love, Out Of The Blue and Only In My Dreams. (With Deb's more mature look, these songs seem almost oddly out of place...at least that's a thought that struck me halfway through SYL). Not letting the crowd cool down at all, she jumped right in with Electric Youth. After that, she let the band and the dancers take a breather while she played One Hand One Heart unaccompanied on the piano. Then she herself took a breather, leaving the band and dancers to entertain the crowd while she went backstage for a costume change. She returned wearing a beautiful red sequined dress and performed Someday with Chris. Keeping with the slower pace, she played No More Rhyme next. And then it was onto my personal favorite part of the show...her salute to Motown and Lamont Dozier (Heatwave, Symphony, Same Old Song, Baby Love, Can't Help Myself, Come See About Me, How Sweet It Is, I'll Be There, ...and some others that I've forgotten). At about this time, some guy decided the time was right to jump up on stage with Deb. No matter, he was quickly escorted away, and Deb jumped into It Must've Been My Boy before exiting the stage once again for another costume change. While she was away, the band played on, Adam Tese treating the crowd to some top notch sax playing. Deb returned wearing what I can only describe as a "clown outfit" to do Stand Your Ground, and Foolish Beat (yeah! After 5 years I *finally* got to see her do it live). Then she introduced the band members and played Anything Is Possible before saying goodnight...for the first time. Of course she was back with an encore after 5 minutes of the crowd chanting "DE-BBIE DE-BBIE...". The encore was Lost In Your Eyes, with Deb at the piano, and finally We Could Be Together, with about a dozen kids pulled from the audience to join her on stage (lucky them...she grabbed my hand, but I was not to be one of the chosen ones...oh well). The Show (7/28/91) ------------------ It started out the same as the Friday night show, but with a purple pants- suit instead of the sequins. There were some pleasant differences after the midpoint of the show (but since I didn't TRY to keep track of it, I'm somewhat hazy now as to the order of the differences). Anyway... for one thing, she only changed costumes once (into a nice, short black dress), before the duet with Chris. The band, dancers and back-up singers were introduced early on in the show. The Motown medley *seemed* to be a bit different. She didn't play Stand Your Ground. She sang Foolish Beat in the early part of the show. And she seemed to be much more in a piano-playing mood. On friday, she only did 3 songs at the piano. On sunday, she did 3 additional ones: 1) she added Sure to the roster of songs; 2) after the Motown medley she was talking about how she loves the music from that era and how she thinks she was born too late and proceeded to do another of her favorites, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (unaccompanied...*very* nicely done); 3) she brought out a spiral notebook halfway through the show and said she'd like to try out a song on us that she had just written. It was called Heart And Soul. Another slow love song, played on the piano unacompanied, it sort of has the same feel to it as Sure. The best difference in this show was that she played my all-time favorite song, Crocodile Rock ("I haven't done this one in a while, and never with this band, so forgive us if we screw it up"...don't worry Deb, it was perfect!). The final difference was that there were no encores...she finished the show with We Could Be Together (bringing family members on stage instead of pulling kids up ("I've got about a bezillion family members living in NJ, I'm gonna drag some of 'em out here with me for this next one")), but after the curtain went down, it never went back up. Well that's about it in a nutshell. My only regret? That I didn't also get tickets to the Saturday night show!!! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= WESTBURY CONCERT REVIEWS Chris Backa (CSC3CSB@HOFSTRA.BITNET) Wed, 7 Aug 91 15:40 EST On August 5th and 6th at the Westbury Music Fair, Debbie Gibson gave two of the best concerts I ever saw!!! She sang songs from all her albums and more! Since it was in a round and small building we got to see Debbie up close. The dancing was excellent, the costumes were great and Debbie looked 21!!! Gone were the 'shake break', Keeth, Kirk, Tommy, but her new band, with some members of her old, like Adam, were excellent. Her back up singers (there were two, the tall black lady was gone) were really good. Debbie also combined Shake Your Love and Out of the Blue into a medley. Here is a list of songs, by album, that she sang: From OOTB: Aug 5 and 6: Out of the Blue Shake Your Love Foolish Beat Only in My Dreams {Aug5 w/ Keeth Stewart, he was grabbed out of the audience by Debbie} From EY: Aug 5 and 6: Electric Youth We Could Be Together {encore both nights, last song}[brought kids and parents on stage] Lost in Your Eyes {encore, had whole place sing it w/ her, sounded cool!} No More Rhyme From AIP: Aug 5 and 6: Another Brick Falls {great Deb piano solo!!} Reverse Pyschology {Aug 5th only} Stand Your Ground {Aug 6th only} One Hand, One Heart {really good} Sure Must've been My Boy {done w/ one of her dancers as 'her boy', done like a story, well done} One Step Ahead {first song both nights, excellent, better than album} Other songs included: Aug 5 and 6: Motown Medley-Lamont Dozier songs, better than the Electric Youth one. Will You Still Love Me {encore} Crocodile Rock {encore- Aug5 only, dancing on the piano} Someday {w/ Chris Cuevas} The August 6th concert included some firsts for Debbie in concert: Debbie was really charged and so was the audience; the place was packed. Debbie ran off stage after AIP, and the crowd started to chant 'Debbie' really loud, Debbie rushed back on stage {her band was still backstage}, with a notebook in her hand, and asked if the audience wanted to hear for the first time, a brand new song, which she apologized for, because it was still a rough draft and has not been demoed yet, it was her and the piano, the song was called 'Taken By You'. Which she dedicated to all her fans, for all the support they have given her. It's a slow song, similiar to the 'Most Beautiful Love Song'. Well, the song could have been recorded as is it was since it was fantastic!! One of the lines is "..say that you love me.", well we all shouted 'We Love You!!' and Debbie had a big smile on her face. When the song was over, everyone was standing and screaming and clapping, then it turned into another 'Debbie, Debbie' chant, and she asked us if we wanted to hear another song, well of course we did. For the next song Debbie had her keyboard player play the piano, so she could stand in the middle of the round stage. She sang a song from Les Miserables, the audience was all seated, {Westbury likes to keep everyone in there seats, except when Debbie was telling everyone to get out of them}, and very quiet. This is the first time EVER that Debbie sang a Broadway tune in concert, a fact she mentioned herself. She also commented that this was like performing in her backyard, everyone was so close. Anyway, when it was over the audience went nuts!!! She was even more hyped than at the beginning of the concert at this point and sang Lost in Your Eyes and then to close out the show she sang 'We Could Be Together'. A quick comment on Cuevas, he sucked! He used canned music. All I have to say is that Debbie has never been better, it was two GREAT shows. Her voice was stronger, as was her dancing. Costumes ranged from a sexy short black dress to a glittery pants, blouse and hat outfit. She had two costume changes, for both she excused herself, and introduced her dancers (Buddy and gang did a great job). The second change, she had her guitar player and Adam do a solo, which was also great. Coming back from a dressing change she entered doing 'Reverse Psychology' or Stand Your Ground, and during another she entered when doing Someday with Chris Cuevas. He comes out first, and when her verse starts, she walks down to the stage. This was definitly a grown-up, sexier, and classy Debbie Gibson!!!!!!!! If you get to see Debbie on this outing, count yourself as one lucky fan. -Chris =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DEBBIE GIBSON IN CONCERT: THE ONE STEP AHEAD TOUR HITS DEVON, PA. Douglas Rambo (rambo@freezer.acs.udel.edu) Thu, 8 Aug 91 07:51:04 EDT After days of sitting on pins and needles, just waiting for August seventh to arrive, I finally had a chance to see Debbie when she made an appearance at the Valley Forge Music Fair in Devon, PA. As most of us know, Chris Cuevas is the opening act for at least the east coast leg of the "One Step Ahead" World Tour. I arrived just as he got started and he rattled off a few songs of his that got all of the little girls going crazy (thank god I didn't have many behind me). He sang about five or six songs, the most recognizable being _Somehow, Someway_, _Dance Party_ and _Hip Hop_. Overall he rates about a B minus. Debbie came on stage about 9 PM dressed in a black sequin blazer, black spandex type jumpsuit and a black hat with a red flower on it. She started off singing _One Step Ahead_ and followed that with _Another Brick Falls_. From there she went into some of the stuff that made her famous. She performed _Shake Your Love_, went right into _Out Of The Blue_, and then proceeded with _Only In My Dreams_ and _Electric Youth_. Following those she did _One Hand, One Heart_ and _Sure_ before sending the dancers (who were on a break) out so she could make a clothing change. Four or so minutes later Deb came out in a green sequined dress, but not before Chris Cuevas came out doing the intro to their duet _Someday_. As soon as that was over the crowd cheered as Debbie sang _No More Rhyme_. Next she did a medley of Lamont Dozier hits that included _Heatwave_, _Same Old Song_, _Baby Love_, _How Sweet it is_ and _Reach Out / I'll Be There_. That was a good ten to fifteen minutes straight of medley singing and for all useful purposes could've been longer than that. With that behind her she performed _It Must've Been My Boy_ before going in for another clothing change. During this break Adam Tese had the crowd buzzing when he started a jazz type jam session on stage. With his excellent sax work and a square-off with Pat Buchanan on guitar, this made Deb's not being on stage seem almost un-noticeable. When she did make it back on stage she was wearing black pants, a short red jacket/shirt and a black sequined hat. She went on to sing _Stand Your Ground_, _Foolish Beat_ and _Anything Is Possible_ before she decided to quit for the night. After about five minutes of applause and a chant of "DEBBIE DEBBIE", she finally emerged from the tunnel for her encore performance. The first song she did was one she just finished writing while in New York recently. It is titled _Taken By You_ and it is a nice song along the likes of _One Hand, One Heart_. Following that she decided that she would like to do a tune from a musical. She chose _On My Own_ from the hit show Les Mis (sp?) and she was better than the person I heard perform that song a long time ago. From that point the crowd was a litle upset that she hadn't done _Lost In Your Eyes_ during the main show, so she gave into a request by a rather loud group sitting behind the band and made that the next song she did. Lastly she brought the dancers back out for the final song of the evening _We Could Be Together_. During this song she brought twenty or so people from the crowd up onto the stage where they got to sing along with Debbie. My one regret is that I didn't bring my camera to the show. There were MANY people in the audience with cameras and flashbulbs were popping all through the show. This hall is a theater in the round with a revolving stage. Every seat in the house is a good seat and I have no complaints except that Deb and the dancers tended to favor the other side of the building for the first 25 or so minutes of the show, but she evened it out as the night went on. All in all the show is very good (IMO) and even my friend, who isn't big on Debbie's music, walked away saying that she has a lot of respect for Debbie and her music now. - Doug =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= VALLEY FORGE MUSIC FAIR CONCERT REVIEW Steve Weigand (weigand@freezer.acs.udel.edu) Thu, 8 Aug 91 22:29:36 EDT I just saw Deb in concert at the Valley Forge Music Fair in PA! It was really some of her best stuff. She does a lot off her new album, and some material that she just wrote. The big crowd heart-stopper was a song that she just created called "Taken By You". Apparently, she wrote it a couple of days earlier and actually brought the notebook up with her to her piano. It was a ballad, that in my opinion would equal in the success of her #1 ballad, "Lost in your Eyes". "Lost in your Eyes" was again the favorite song from applause and by request. The concert was just about sold out, but there were a few seats still available. It went off without a hitch, with the exception of one guy trying to go on stage and meet Deb - he was quickly spotted by the security and put in his place. Chris Cuevas was, as you know, the opener for her concert. He was met with less enthusiasm, but that's only to be expected. My opinion of Chris was that he was sort of a New Kid's look-alike, catching the attention of the younger females in the audience. And yes, once again, Deb really got into the show; it's truly amazing, the way she has everyone on a one-to-one level with her. It was like she would look your way, ask everyone a question, and you'd actually think she could hear *you* personally. Her stage presence is god-like; it's as if she radiates an energy that everyone absorbs. It's sorta like when a great speaker, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, would be on stage; everyone takes in what she says and really listens. It was really amazing. - Steve Weigand =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= CABOODLES BILLBOARD AD Constantin Caroutas (cc433336@longs.LANCE.ColoState.Edu) Mon, 05 Aug 91 15:01:15 MST Below is the text from a full-page advertisement (glossy paper) in the 3 August 1991 issue of Billboard magazine. They started the last one with some female singing what I thought sounded a lot like Debbie Gibson. After a few more seconds I was convinced it was her, and then... it's an ad for Caboodles! They advertise that it is the "magazine you WATCH instead of read". Each video tape, priced at $12.98, is approximately 40 minutes long and features about 8 'stories'. At this point, you must be saying to yourself, what does this have to do with Debbie Gibson? Well, wonder no longer; I am pleased to announce that the SECOND ISSUE of TeenVid features Debbie with Chris Cuevas. The segment is about 6 minutes long and consists of a combined interview with both Debbie and Chris, and clips of the never-seen before "Hip Hop" video (the song that Debbie co-wrote for Chris). First, they introduce themselves. Then Chris tells the story of how they met/how he got his record contract. (Debbie occassionally interrupts with friendly comments.) Then, they individually talk about their parents (Diane and his dad), their goals in show business (movies, etc.), fan mail, and the idea of "anything is possible". In this interview, Debbie is wearing a black blouse (they only showed her from the waist up). Her hair is very short and brushed forward, like in the Caboodles ad. She was wearing one silver earring in her left ear. She also was wearing minimal makeup and pale red lipstick. She looked VERY pretty! You can probably find this TeenVid tape at your local major video store. I got mine at the major chain, Blockbuster video who is avidly advertising this new series of videotapes. The price of the video is rather high for just a few minutes of Debbie, but I feel it is worth it if you also have an interest in Chris. I also think this is the best opportunity to see parts of the "Hip Hop" video; unfortunately, it seems that Debbie does not appear in the "Hip Hop" video. I saw it at Hasting's (two copies), but not at Sound Warehouse. I really don't know if this means anything, but I don't think it does. When "The Promise Of A New Day" was released, I saw some 20 copies at Sound Warehouse, but none at Hasting's until the week after. The general design of the cassingle jacket is the same as of the other three (the only difference is a somewhat different shade of yellow). While I don't buy cassingles, I don't think I'm out of line in expressing disappointment. If she needs a new start, an old design won't do. Not to mention that from a distance all her ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE cassingles look alike... Also, the picture on it is the motorcycle one --arghh... Couldn't she take a new picture? Must she subject her fans to pictures that are a year old? I really cannot understand why a new picture was not used. The cassingle contains the radio ("hot") version and the "LP" one. I can't understand why they say LP when ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE was not pressed on vinyl. Also, I believe that they should include on the cassingle another song from the album. If someone buys the cassingle, then two songs on it from the album would increase the chances that they end up buying the album too. That's what they should have done since the moment the album left the charts. Each cassingle after "Anything Is Possible" should have had as a B-side another song from the album. One song only, or previously unreleased songs as B-sides, are for popular albums that don't need any push from the cassingles. Constantin =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= PRO SET MUSICARD PROMO CARD Alan Chim (alan@arkham.wimsey.bc.ca) Fri, 02 Aug 91 10:12:40 PDT As mentioned in BTL3-9, Samuel Lau and I discovered that there was a Debbie Gibson Promotional Card issued by Pro Set prior to the release of the next series of Musicards. The first series contained 4 cards of Debbie Gibson, 3 of which have already been reviewed. The promotional card has five distinct differences besides the pictures. The lettering on the top right hand corner of the front of the card and the bottom left corner of the back of the card which says "Pro Set Super Stars Musicards" are in different type. The lettering is more "fancy" than the regular Debbie Gibson cards. The short write up on the back of promo card is written in clearer type rather than bold type which was used in the regular series offerings. The colours of the borders have also been altered, as the promo card uses a lighter green and pink. Another difference is that on the back of the card, the green and pink borders have been switched, so that the green is on the top and the pink is at the bottom. The last, and most obvious, difference is that the back of the card bears no number. The front features the same picture that is on the back of the AIP CD, that is with Deb on the Harley. The back has a smaller close-up photo which was used on Debbie Gibson's Musicard #43 in the regular Pro Set series. It looks like the _This So Called Miracle_ picture according to Edwin Nomura. The text on the back is longer than most of the cards in the regular series and says: "The Debbie Gibson story is extraordinary! This songwriter/singer/ multi-instrumentalist's first single "Only in My Dreams", was released in the spring of 1987 when she was only 16 years old. She had written this song which rapidly climbed to the top of the dance charts and went on to become a top five pop hit. Debbie's second studio album "Electric Youth" had all 11 cuts written by her and six of them were produced by her." Most of the songs are not meant to be played solely on the piano and therefore were not expected to translate well to sheet music. I particularly like how all the introductions distinctly resemble the original song (I usually don't get any further than the intros though). "One Hand, One Heart" plays very well, much like "Lost In Your Eyes", being that both are piano-based songs. Overall, I think the best parts of this book are the beautiful color pictures and the music to OHOH. Sandra Chen (ez003229@pollux.ucdavis.edu) will receive submissions and will be responsible for immediate releases. We will try to release the next issue on August 31st to commemorate Debbie's Birthday. If you have any birthday wishes or thoughts for Debbie that you would like to share, please forward them to us. Although chances are slim that Debbie will ever read them here, we're looking for: big wishes, little wishes, thank yous, poems, reflections on her career, etc. We will have a special section in the next issue devoted to her birthday if we get enough responses. Remember, Debbie is turning 21 and you could be a part of this! According to Henry Lee, Z-95.3 FM in Vancouver has been giving _One Step Ahead_ airplay. In fact, it made it to the top 8 at 8 more than once which shows that people are requesting the song. In contrast, Chris Backa claims that when he requested _One Step Ahead_ on WPLJ in New York, the operators sounded annoyed. The TV Guide states that Debbie will be appearing in the "International Special Olympics Gala" on August 15, 1991 (ABC, 8:00 PM Pacific Time - check your local listings for exact times).
