I first heard and saw Deborah's "Only in My Dreams" video sometime in the summer of 1987. I was watching VH-1 (kinda bored) when the VJ (no, I don't remember his name) started introducing this "world premiere" video from a sixteen year old girl that was making more money than he was. Being sixteen myself, I immediately "pumped up the volume". I wasn't bowled over at first, but in the next few weeks, I grew to like it quite a bit. I've discovered that I like just about anything if MTV plays it enough. A little while later, "Shake Your Love" was released. This song is the sole reason I wasn't a die-hard Deb fan earlier. I *still* don't like it all that much. After "Out of the Blue" (the single) was released, however, she had redeemed herself and I was now thinking about buying the album. I was still holding back since I was in the transition from lps to cassettes and had not yet bought a "serious" stereo system. Fortunately (for me), the radio station that I listened to at the time apparently didn't like "OOTB" so they played "Foolish Beat" instead. Half an hour after hearing it, I was the proud owner of the "OOTB" cassette (my first one). I was very impressed with the album, although I didn't particularly like the cassette format. Within a few months, I had bought a cd player (yea!) and had, of course, re-purchased "OOTB" on cd (again, my first). Since then, I've listened to Deb religiously, although I didn't buy many of her releases, just the major stuff: albums and videos. However, I'm trying to rectify (ugly word) that situation now by buying everything in sight with her name on it. Unfortunately, I still haven't seen her live yet. Would you believe that I missed the "OOTB" tour because I was busy listening to her album, not the radio, and missed the advertisements?!? Major bummer. Last year, I sent her a birthday present. I felt sorry for her since it was her twentieth birthday (that's half-way to forty) and I was in a "let's spend some money" mood. So I bought a fairly expensive black felt hat (couldn't think of anything else). I was kinda wondering if I'd gone overboard when I received a thank-you letter from her. It was even written and signed by Deborah herself! No mail-merging here! (btw, the envelope was postmarked Aug. 22 - she cheats and opens early. tsk tsk!) Let me tell you, it made everything worthwhile! In fact, I'll probably send her something again this year. Anyway, if you ever see her wearing a black felt hat with a wide, puffy, purple band, please tell me! Seriously, I'd like to introduce myself to this newsletter since many other people have done so. I am a citizen of Great Britain who emigrated to the U.S. in 1985. I am presently a permanent resident alien of this country. I am a computer programmer and a disc jockey for a local radio station (don't ask how the two go together but it sure helps in getting ahold of promotional material!). I have been a fan of Ms. Gibson since I first heard "Shake your Love" and saw the video on MTV. Strangely enough, I had not been impressed with the song or video of "Only in my dreams". The "Out of the Blue" CD was the first CD I ever bought for my CD player. Since then I have bought everything I can get my hands on. My collection is small but growing, and consists of things such as the edition of an original vinyl copy of the American Top 40 that she did, a copy of Anything is Possible sent by Atlantic in CART format (used by radio stations) and a tape of an interview she did for BBC Radio 1 in England last year, oh, and this cute "8-ball" that tells your fortune and has the words "Anything is Possible" written on it - someone at Atlantic sure thought it was cute! I'm looking for any GIF files of her for my SVGA monitor... and any large posters, etc. Despite being a great admirer of her works I have as yet been unable to see her live. Unfortunately when she was in the U.S. last year I was in Britain and the day she came over to Britain I was flying back to the U.S. and when she called my station to do some promotional cuts I wasn't there again! (sometimes fate just simply hurts!). I am resolute in seeing her on her next tour though. I have yet to convince the program director to get her to come over and do some interviews in person -- but I'm working on it! Being a computer programmer I am interested in what kind of computer related equipment she uses. I know she uses some kind of Macintosh since she thanks "MidiMouse" in her "Out of the Blue" album which is a Macintosh product as far as I know. ================================================================ | Jonathan M. However, I will try and present mostly my differences of opinion with the other reviews presented in BTL so far. I first listened to most of the album in bed pretty late at night. I remember thinking how different it was from most of today's disposable pop, incorporating elements that we rarely hear in top 40 music any more. Now that I've listened to the album more, it sounds more typical than atypical, but it is still a good one. I like the CD cover the way it is. The longbox has the album name and Debbie's name on it. After all, once you buy it, you know what it is. It's nice not to have any words cluttering up the picture. Why would you WANT them there? My only complaint is that there was a big sticker stuck right on Debbie's shoulder on the longbox, UNDER the shrink-wrap. My parents' CD player doesn't seem to like the disc, though. It takes it about a minute to read in all the track info and start playing. My CD player doesn't have any problems with it. Another Brick Falls This one is very catchy. The line that spoils it for me is "a thorn gets stuck right in my side." I have to wonder why Debbie doesn't rephrase her lyrics more often to avoid awkwardness like this. Or maybe she likes it that way. Or is it just a Lamont-ism? Anything is Possible Kind of repetitive, and the "anything is possible" chant sounds rather flaky. It just starts out repetitive and never quite recovers. I equate this song with her last title track - not too awful exciting, and probably a poor choice. But I like way the first verse flips around between left and right channels. Reverse Psychology Somewhat corny lyrics, but even the rap/chant is catchy. One Step Ahead When my brother heard this song for the first time, he asked "What are you listening to, Madonna?" I have to agree, this could have been a Madonna song a couple of years ago during one of her many phases, although the lyrics are uncharacteristic of what she would sing. It's a good song though. Stand Your Ground Chorus is a bit boring compared to the rest of the song. But it's a pretty good one, considering. Deep Down I thought too that this song would fit in on Out of the Blue, but then I listened to that album and the difference in maturity in the sound is quite obvious. Again, though, it gets repetitive. It Must've Been My Boy Nice horns, catchy melody. True the lyrics are annoying. I have to wonder if a different "plot" would improve this song. Lead Them Home My Dreams I agree the lyrics present a confusing and unclear picture, but I do like this tune. Maybe it's just that it doesn't really fit in on either side of the album. The mood of the song is just different enough to be interesting (and to keep the song from being popular!). I'm hoping that the many people who don't like this song but can't figure out why will grow to like it. One Hand, One Heart What can I say about this song that hasn't already been said? Sure This is one of my favorites. Typical Debbie ballad. Negative Energy Starts out very slowly, but the bridge (and the repetition of "I keep wondering where we ever went wrong") *almost* rescues it from oblivion. I'm too lazy to program my CD player to skip it, though. Mood Swings Kind of boring. Try Another good one. I have to agree that if "Even steel can break" wasn't repeated in the first verse the song would have been much better. But you get past that quickly. In His Mind Another daring one as far as mood and key. Where Have You Been? When I listen to this song I always think of Debbie coming home late and her mom asking her this question. But it's a good one. I especially like the harmonies. This So-called Miracle A good ending for the album. Instrumentation is interesting, and it's got an emotional sound. I liked the George Harrison-esque guitar at the beginning. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= A NEW DG SONG FROM JAPAN Sandy Lee Date: Wed, 16 Jan 1991 8:10:00 PST WEA AMDY-5034 (WITHOUT YOU) 11/90 This is a Japanese 3 inch CD-single with 2 tracks. It is packaged in thin cardboard packaging that can be assembled into a mini-CD holder. Pictured is a seated, long haired Debbie (not quite smiling, but almost). Value : $12+ (depends on where you find it - cheaper in Japan) Tracks : 1) Without You (4:20) 2) Without You Instrumental (4:18) Notes : Tracks were made for "About Men", a Japanese TV show (TBS). This CD-single has ONLY been released in Japan. Review : "Without You" is a ballad with a twist. The theme is a non depressing one; it is a song of praise that features something that has been mysteriously absent from her recent batch of songs: a catchy melody. So catchy in fact, that the instrumental is just as pleasant to listen to as the vocal. A refreshing departure from the NRG^ and depressing ballads of _Anything is Possible_. Technical: Production sounds a bit rough and the lyrics are choppy at times, but this is due to Debbie having to sing over the entire instrumental track (she didn't write the music!). Rating : 8 (out of 10). WITHOUT YOU ----------- Words: Deborah Gibson Music: Tatsuro Yamashita Produced by: Andrew Zulla Verse 1: Couldn't go anywhere Without feeling, All alone inside Could say I didn't care But that would be a lie I've seen a million faces Passing through my eyes But yours stays with me And I hope you realize that... Chorus: Life wouldn't be the same without you That whole world revolves around you And when I've called on you You were always there Only a true friend can give me All the joy each day you bring me I have to tell you 'cause it's true Life wouldn't be the same Without you Verse 2: I could turn I could smile I could cry for a little while 'Cause I know you'll always put me in my place It's this thing friendship brings A little of everything But most of all a smile to my face And I've seen a million of them Passing through my eyes But yours stays with me I just hope you realize that... The first pressing contains a 20-page booklet with colour photos of Debbie {great!}. The lyrics {in a separate booklet} are printed in both English and Japanese. The lyrics for _Without You_ are included. There are also 3 pages of additional information {probably about Debbie} but my knowledge of Japanese is non-existent. There is also a a note showing a shop selling Debbie Gibson clothes -- designed by her(?) + printed T-shirts... Again, Japanese stops me from reading the information but it seems like the shop is situated in Tokyo. The address of the shop is: 75 Rockerfeller Plaza FLANDRE New York, NY 10019 3-4-9 Sendagaya Tel: 212(484)8880 Shibuya-Ku, Tokyo -- Japan Tel: 03(470)6141 Here is a description of the booklet: Page # Description 1 Facial shot -- same as on AIP album cover, but more close-up. 2-3 Same as on cover of DGIF 3.1. 4 Same as {but mirrored} as upper right in AIP promo pamphlet. 5 Facial shot -- standing beside a wall. 6 Three small photos -- Debbie on a railway station(?). All pictures are from the same photo session. One is the same as on the DGIF official T-shirt. 7 One bigger picture of Debbie -- same photo session as 6. 8 Debbie leaning against white wall. Brick wall in the background. Wearing black leather jacket + blue jeans. 9 Same as on the backside of the lyrics booklet. 10 Debbie sitting down. Wearing jeans + multicolored blouse. 11 Facial shot -- same as left, middle row in AIP promo pamphlet. 12-13 Big {well, as big as it gets in a CD-sized booklet} live photo of Debbie playing the piano. Three tiny pictures a the bottom -- two live + one with fans in Japan (appeared in DGIF some time ago, I think). 14-15 These ain't pretty. Debbie wearing something awful {in red}. 16 Great picture of Debbie. Wearing purple jacket + earring in left ear. 17 Just another picture - not one of my favourites. Wearing light blue jacket. 18 Lower left in AIP promo pamphlet. 19 Upper left in AIP promo pamphlet. 20 Same as {US} AIP 12". I don't know what to say; I would probably buy it even though I had the _Without You_ CD-single and the AIP CD, but that's me. Most people would say that it's a waste of money...If you buy the set MAKE SURE that the booklet is in it. It is only available with the first pressing, which is now out of stock on this side of the Atlantic. DISCLAIMER: Colours, makeup and clothes are not my specialty; my descriptions wouldn't be very accurate in Swedish -- they're worse in English! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DEB ON ARSENIO HALL Daniel Welty (WELTY@buphyc.bu.edu) Date: Mon, 21 Jan 91 12:42 EDT BtL Members, Greetings from Boston! As all of you know, Deborah appeared on Arsenio Hall (Wednesday, January 16,1991). Many of you were unable to see her because of the War coverage on CBS affiliated stations. I saw it and recorded it. So the following is a review of the show. The following information was taken from the Arsenio Hall show without permission. Some words and other details were left out to preserve the length of this SUBMISSION. However, the parts left out do not affect the content of Arsenio Hall's questions and comments, and Deborah Gibson's answers and comments. Let us proceed. ********************************************************************* The show opened with Deborah singing "Anything Is Possible." The performance started out with her 3 female backup singers singing the title acappella. The song continued as normal. This was a heavily choreographed number compared to other Deborah performances. There were 7 other dancers including Buddy, but where was Keeth? Interview: Arsenio - (points out her "new all grown up image") Deborah - It was done "tongue in cheek" to get rid of the "squeaky clean" image. So I wanted to get a Harley and show everyone and do something different. Arsenio - "Are they (the press) letting you grow up?" Deborah - "Yes and no." They never talk about the music, they give constructive criticism, but don't get past the teen image. Arsenio - "What's the biggest misconception about Debbie Gibson?" Deborah - "People say she lives at home, she must have everything done for her, she must have come from money, y'know Long Island. Which was never the case, we really built everything up ourselves. We worked long and hard." ("we" meaning her family) Arsenio - (compares AIP to Janet Jackson's CONTROL) Deborah - "Part of growing up was letting go of some of the control, and seeing what other people had to offer me." Deborah - "I am nowhere near where I want to be musically." Arsenio - "Who were some big influences?" Deborah - Billy Joel and Elton John (showmanship). Arsenio - (Jokes about Jellybean (i.e. Madonna) and asks if there will be a Justify My Love video in her future) Deborah - (cannot say "No" fast enough and laughs) Deborah - "I'm always real positive and I try to stay away from that. ("that" meaning the real sexual image) Because we have so many problems in this world right now and I think the kids are getting the wrong idea lots of times. It works for her (Madonna) but not for me." (applause) Deborah - (says "Hi" to two boys from a boys home that she spent the holidays with, Anthony and Rinaldo) Arsenio - (thanks her for appearing) ********************************************************************* All in all it was a very good performance by her, and a good interview. She did not mention anything about her parents separation. Deborah did not mention anything about the next single either. I think we are all tired of her being compared with Madonna. Even though they are both "pop stars", they are very different. I do admit that comparison with people comes with fame fortune, but enough already. I wonder if the War will affect her plans for overseas touring? If it does then we should expect her to start the U.S. tour sooner. Let's hope that this is not the case and everything goes as planned. Let's hope the War will end and nobody will have to change their plans, be them overseas or not. Peace. -Daniel K. Welty Boston University Sophomore Astrophysics =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DEB ON JOAN RIVERS Matthew Jung (ez000018@bullwinkle.ucdavis.edu) Date: Mon, 9 Feb 91 20:47 PST Unlike the Regis and Kathie Lee appearance, she didn't have on gobs of makeup. Her outfit was also quite nice with a blue blouse and blank pants. Even though she was in Rio recently, she didn't have a tan. Her hairdo was identical to what it was on Regis and Kathie Lee. She performed her new single _This So-Called Miracle_ against a pre-recorded track. After the commercial break following the performance, Deborah sat down for an interview with Joan. Joan asked about the boyfriend situation and Deb replied with basically the same line about "meeting guys in roundabout ways." She gave an example of how she dated a crew member on one of her tours because he was a down to earth person. Her new image came up next and Joan asked about her fan reaction. Deborah said that the letters she has been getting were very protective of her image. Like in previous interviews, she says that it was not a calculated move. As in the previous Joan River's appearance, Deb was asked when she would move away from home. Debbie said that she didn't want to leave home because she is surrounded by strangers all day and likes to come home to family. She also said that she gets all the freedom she wants now. The next topic was her parent's separation. She admitted it was difficult and said that the whole thing could have gone down during a show, but she had to go on stage and put on a smile anyway. You could tell Deborah was still upset about it, but she seemed to be getting over it; she was less tense in this TV appearance compared to ones last year during her album release (which probably coincided with the stormiest part of the separation). Her sisters were brought up next and her youngest sister is into art while her two older sisters work together in a publishing company that her eldest sister runs. Her older sister Michele was there that day fixing Deb's hair before the show. Asked if she would ever cover other songs, Deb said she would like to, but gets personal satisfaction performing a song she has written on stage and seeing the audience reaction. She also denied that writing one's own songs makes them a better singer and brought up Whitney Houston as an example. Towards the end, the reason behind the cancellation of Skirts came up. Lastly, Deborah mentioned that her favorite artists were Mariah Carey, Harry Connick Jr., Billy Joel, and Elton John. It was a good appearance and would have even been better if they didn't waste time on Vanilla Ice. Four minutes were lost between Ice on the phone and one of Joan's workers that went on a date with him before. Ice was supposed to call her back when he was in New York and he didn't. Deb's advice was to forget about him, diva-rapper or not, because he is just a person and there are "a lot of fish in the sea." =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DEB ON LIFESTYLES OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS Matthew Jung (ez000018@bullwinkle.ucdavis.edu) Date: Mon, 9 Feb 91 20:51 PST It seems like I have been waiting for years for Lifestyles of the Rich and famous to do a story on Deborah. Finally, they did and I would like to thank Felix Ng for letting us know she would be on. Robin Leach was present at one of Deborah's tour rehearsals. Deborah was wearing a white sweatshirt with a peace sign on it. While Robin Leach was narrating, they showed Deb perform _Another Brick Falls_ on the piano and _One Step Ahead_ with her dancers. I noticed that Deb used weights on her ankles when she danced to tone her muscles up. Afterwards, they showed parts of her house. It is 10,000 square feet in size and in an exclusive part of Long Island. The interior of her house is very clean, but they neglected to show her room (probably is a mess). Her studio was shown with parts of _This So-Called Miracle_ playing in the background. Never before seen on television was part of a performance Deb did at Something Different, the place that used to give free ice cream to kids who performed there. Even at that young age, she seemed like a pro. I didn't recognize what she was singing, but it probably was something from Broadway. Overall, this was a good segment since it showed us things that we have never seen before like her house and a performance at Something Different. The only minor complaint I had was how Robin Leach was giving out so much inaccurate information. For one thing, he must have gotten his info from an old presskit because he made the mistake of giving Deb credit for 5 top 10 singles off the OOTB album. Nevertheless, I was pretty happy. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DEB WHTZ INTERVIEW Chris Backa (CSC3CSB%HOFSTRA.BITNET@YALEVM.YCC.Yale.Edu) Date: Wed, 6 Feb 91 13:48 EST Interview: Debbie Gibson Date: 2/6/91 Media: Radio WHTZ-100, Z-100 Rockin in Rio II Largest audience she ever performed for (150,000 people).
