I am a Computer Science Major at Hofstra University on Long Island, which is only 20min. away from the where Debbie lives. Even though she is close to the area of the school, I have yet to meet her. I didn't become a real big Debbie fan until Electric Youth came out in 1989. My favorite songs are Only in My Dreams and Lost in Your Eyes. My favorite Debbie songs she hasn't sung are Friendly and Everytime We Say Goodbye. Hope to hear from you all. -Chris Backa csc3csb@hofstra =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= INTRO BY BRIAN PEEBLES Brian Peebles (PEEBLES%GRIN1.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU) Date: Mon, 29 Oct 90 10:03:29 cst Ok, interesting story....I first got "into" liking Debbie because of Shake your love, which I saw on MTV a lot and heard on the radio...that was, I guess, during 1988 or so, and some friends of mine and me used to always make fun of the song, not really for its quality or anything, but we used to always sing it in that Wayne Newton-style-cheezy-Las-Vegas-night-club genre. The song sounds really funny that way, try it, you'll laugh, I'll promise. Anyway, it wasn't really against Debbie, the song was just kind of a little inside joke. But then this one guy was given "Out of the Blue" for his birthday from his grandma or something and he hadn't even opened it and I asked if it was any good and he said he hadn't listened to it but I could have it since he didn't want it, and after listening to it a few times, it kinda grew on me....well anyhow, my roommate (here at Grinnell) saw the music list and told me about it and I signed up, and here I am, and the rest is (or, will be) history. That's all I have, but I'm glad to have found BtL....thanks :-) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= INTRO BY ROBERT CHESNAVICH Robert Christopher Chesnavich (rc3u+@andrew.cmu.edu) Date: Mon, 29 Oct 90 21:24:57 -0500 (EST) Well, I guess that I waited long enough to tell this story. First of all, my name is Robert Chesnavich. I'm a new subscriber to Between The Lines. I go to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa, and I'm majoring in mathematics. My first experience with Debbie Gibson was her first release "Only In My Dreams". It was a good song, and hearing that song somewhat reminds me of the Summer of '87. However, for a long time before that I had not been listening to the radio at all. I had just started up again when that song came out, so I was hearing many songs for the first time. As a result, I wasn't a fan of hers until I heard and saw the video for "Foolish Beat". The first few times I saw that video, my jaw dropped. I have never heard such a perfectly sad song in my life, nor seen a video that works so well with it. To this day, that remains my favorite song of all time. However, one song does not make an artist, so it wasn't until I heard "Staying Together" that she was my favorite. I could go on about other songs of hers that I like and why I like them, but I think you'll much prefer this story. The date is August 2, 1989. I'm at work at the Jersey Journal, a medium-sized newspaper in Jersey City (right across the Hudson from New York). It's near quitting time, and a friend of mine who knows that I'm a DG fan tells me that at the Palladium that night, some radio station is having a celebration, and she is going to be there. That was all I needed to hear, and right after work I hopped on a train and was over there in no time. Unfortunately, to get in, I needed to be on a guest list, and there was no way I was getting on it. I was ready to leave, but I decided not to make my trip a total waste. I went to try to draw something on my wrist which stated that I was to be allowed in (everybody else was stamped on their wrist) when I noticed a crowd around back. Checking them out, I found out that this was how all the stars were getting in, so I decided to stay there until DG came and left. As I'm waiting there, I start talking with a guy there who I find out is also a Debbie Gibson fan. In fact, he says that once he went ice skating with her. When he said that something clicked in the back of my head. I remember reading in a magazine a letter from a guy who said the same thing, and there was a picture that went with it. THIS WAS THAT GUY! I simply couldn't believe what a stroke of luck this was, but I would be more shocked by the time the night was through. All the while, various artist are walking in (an incidentally, this is the first time I'd ever seen anybody really famous in person, just to add to the excitement): Hall & Oates, Paula Abdul, Cyndi Lauper, Adam Curry (who is huge! 6' 6" at least!), New Kids On The Block (who were the cause of most of the crowd), and of course, Debbie Gibson. I held a sign up for her to see, but going in and coming out she didn't see it, though she did see that guy both times and said "Hi". Well, that alone would have been enough for one night, but then he polishes it off with this one. "Would you like her to call you?" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "I take that as a yes." Yes, it was a yes, and I went home in complete amazement. Still, I was cautious at the fact that she probably would never call, and my family told me not to even bother hoping. Next day at work the phone rings. "Jersey Journal Classified" "Hello, is Robert Chesnava there?" "Chesnavich?" "Uh....Yeah!" "This is him." "Hi! This is Debbie Gibson!" "!!!!! Uh.." "Could you hold on one second?" "Sure. Uh.." (Me to the office): "DEBBIE'S ON THE LINE!" The word spread like wildfire and the whole first floor was suddenly dropping by. (Debbie) "Sorry about that. Now, how are you doing?" "Fantastic! Say, before you say anything else, I'd just like to say that it's really nice of you to take time out of your busy schedule to call me up." "Oh, it's no problem. So, is there anything you'd like to ask me?" You know, before that phone call and after it I thought of about 100 things to ask her. But on the spot, all I could think of was, "Uh, well, actually I'd like to know if your planning to release 'Silence Speaks'" "Hold on, let me ask my agent. 'MOM!' murmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmur. No." I thought that was cute. Between that fact that she called Mom when she wanted her "agent", and other things that she said, "Hold on. Buddy wants to ask me something", I knew it had to be her. After that I was sitting in blissful shock, not so much because I had talked to her, but because I gotten to do something that comparatively few people get to do. But the best was yet to come. Eight days after that I'm at Carnegie Mellon, my freshman year. I was wearing her t-shirt, and somebody asks me hold old she is, and I think, "OK. Let's see. Today's August 31, so..... HEY! Today's her nineteenth birthday!" Well, I decided I had to do something. Fortunately, I still had the number of the guy I met that night. I asked him what I should do and he said, "Well..... OK. I'm not supposed to do this, but I'm going to give you her phone number. You have to promise me, however, that you will give it to NO ONE." I promised, and he gave me her number. Nervously, I called it up. "Hi! You've reached Gibson Productions Inc......" It was her Mom's voice. This was close enough, so I left a happy birthday message for her. Stupidly, I left my number but not my name. Still, the feeling of finally doing something for her was incredible. I've decided to make it a yearly ritual to call her up once: on her birthday. I called her up again this year, same recording, and I left the same message. I figure after about 20 years she might notice me :-) . I haven't succumbed to any pressures to give out her phone number and I don't plan to. That's a promise I don't intend to break, mostly for her sake, because I know all I have to do is give it to the wrong person, and soon everybody will have it and she'll be flooded with calls (not to mention if that happens, she'll change her number). Well that's my story. I hoped you enjoyed it half as much as I did experiencing it. See y'all when album number 3 hits the shelves. -Rob "RAIN MAN" Chesnavich rc3u@andrew.cmu.edu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= BEST ARTICLE CONTEST Matthew Jung (ez000018@bullwinkle.ucdavis.edu) Date: Mon, 5 Nov 90 00:08:30 PST The best article contest is still on. The little boy was my friend's cousin's friend. From: Jonathan Bradshaw To: All Msg #58, 06:17pm Oct-24-90 Subject: `Anything Is Possible' I just received the 'promo' type introductory leaflet about DG's new album. This is sent to Music Directors so that, hopefully, when they send the actual album it will get on the air quicker. Anyway, J.K. passed it on to me (knowing the fan I am) and I figured I would transcribe it to you: --- After nine months of labor, I'm proud to announce the birth of a new album -- Anything Is Possible. The project in its entirety consists of sixteen songs, twelve complete originals and four co-written with Lamont Dozier. Because my first two albums were recorded in the midst of such a whirlwind, I never had the chance to experiment with production as much as I would have like to. This time, however, things were different -- live string and horn sections were recorded in Los Angeles, and live drums were recorded in the living room! I worked again with producer Fred Zarr and for the first time with Jellybean Benitez and Lamont Dozier. The first single from this project is the title track. `Anything Is Possible' was written with Lamont Dozier at his house in California on a very energetic and creative day. This day brought about three new songs, all of which ended up on my forthcoming album. For me, the interest in this song is the positive theme, set to a darker-sounding track. I hope you enjoy listening to the music as much as I enjoyed making it. "If you set your mind You can do anything you want. Not every guy is a bad guy -- Don't stereotype 'Cause this guy, he proved me wrong He taught me Anything is possible ..." I was talking to a guy from the local radio station about the new Deb song and he said that it was being premiered tonight at 9:00pm EST..So, I rushed home and starting listening for it......they were having a 'which song is better' contest and they asked people to call in to vote.....well, I heard it and it is GREAT!!!! very nicely done.......she was against Glenn Medieros ......Well, I called in about 6 or 7 times and the last time the guy at the station taped me talking about what I did tonight and my vote and name.... I was soooooooooo excited.....and DEBORAH WON!!!! so, her song was played again I was able to record it twice along with my voice on the radio.... Also my friend was watching for the video today and found it was being premiered on MTV.....so he taped it and it was very very different from other Debbie stuff........she has no clothes on!!! no not really but very little should I say......... It's almost like the 'SYL' video with the dancing and such.... Oh, I also went to the radio station because I received 4 tickets for a movie by calling in and I got to see the cover of the promo cd for 'AIP' single.. which is really cool......there are 3 tracks, one being the single version and the others, mixes.....I asked him if he could get me one but he said 'NO', so, I'll find it one way or another... the lyrics were printed on the inside of the promo but I couldn't copy them down and send them in... It has been a great night for Deborah and myself.....now I have to call and call to get her song played for her............. later............................GRegg Smith =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= _ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE_ LYRICS Douglas E Rambo (rambo@brahms.udel.edu) Date: Sun, 4 Nov 90 22:40:49 -0500 ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE -------------------- Written by Deborah Gibson and Lamont Dozier; Deborah Ann's Music ASCAP/ Beau-Di-O-Do Music/ Warner Tamerlane Publishing Corp., BMI. I was also looking forward to the video since I enjoyed watching most of her videos. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. A friend was able to tape the video for me off MTV. I wasn't able to hear it on the local radio stations since they are still mad at Deborah for cancelling a concert back in August 6, 1988. Anyway, this is the first time I've ever seen a DG video before hearing the single on the radio. I've seen it several times now and I don't like the song. It just doesn't sound like Deborah's style. Perhaps it would have been better if someone else sang it (Whitney Houston? Pebbles?). I also don't think it is very radio ready because the song doesn't sound like any of the stuff currently on the top 40 or dance crossover charts. It is nearly impossible to make out the lyrics of the first verse because of the extensive use of echo. If I didn't have the lyrics available to me already, I would've never been able to figure out what she is singing in the first verse. I have had more luck trying to figure out what she is singing in concert with her new songs. The song also lacks the catchy hook which has made all the other DG songs so special; I would have never guessed she wrote it. Just how much of the song was written by her? It would have been better to give Lamont Dozier full credit for writing the song. I consider it inferior to all the other songs Deb has written for her previous albums as well as for others (Reimy, The Party, Ana). Instead of progressing musically, I feel Deborah has regressed with this single. The video itself is not that great either. Deborah is not featured much in the footage. Instead, most of the video emphasizes the storyline, which doesn't star Deb, and dancers. She doesn't do much dancing and just appears to sing occasionally. The video also had absolutely nothing to do with the song. It reminded me of Madonna's "Express Yourself" video where the theme was totally different from the message of the song. It is nice to know that Deborah believes in peace by using an anti-war theme, but I don't see what it has to do with the song. Deborah's outfit isn't as bad as people claim because it makes you think you see more skin than is actually there. Her long boots alone cover up a lot of skin. The material draped over the rest of her body isn't nearly as see-through as Paula Abdul's outfit in the _Cold Hearted_ video. Even without the material covering her upper body, the thing she is wearing underneath covers too much to be considered a bikini. In fact, some of the other girls in the video show more skin than Deborah. The video does have its moments though. There is a segment where a person who appears to be Keeth Stewart (one of her dancers) playing a pimp. He is wearing this silly yellow outfit with a tall yellow "mad hatter" hat. There are also two brief moments where we can see Deb having fun dancing along-side two men. Perhaps I had my hopes up too high. Of course, I didn't care for several of her other songs before, such as _Red Hot_ and _Stand Your Ground_, but I still like them more than this new single. This is my least favorite song that Deborah has ever worked on. Then again, I should have known better since anything is possible. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= _ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE_ MIXES Douglas E Rambo (rambo@brahms.udel.edu) Date: Wed, 7 Nov 90 09:42:13 -0500 (i) The LP version, like almost everyone has said on rec.music.misc, isn't the greatest song that has come out of Debbie in a while. However, there is one consolation, the DANCE MIX and the DANCE MIX EDIT of the song SEEM to bring out her voice a little more. That is, you can understand what she is saying a lot more. (ii) This song will not skyrocket her to the top of the charts (IMHO) like LOST IN YOUR EYES did. For some reason I still think she should wait longer to collaborate on writing songs. She has had better luck in the past writing the songs and music by herself. So it is not entirely all bad that she co-wrote the song, but it not 100% Debbie as we are used to. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= HITLINES USA Chris Backa (@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU:CSC3CSB@HOFSTRA.BITNET) Date: Mon, 5 Nov 90 12:27 EST She sang 'LIYE' live. From the sound of the ET interview "See Anything's Possible, I'm dressing sexy". It sounded like she was only doing this for the new song. Could this mean she has lost control to Atlantic Records because of the last albums disasterous performance compared to Out of the Blue??? Chris Backa (@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU:CSC3CSB@HOFSTRA.BITNET) Do you know anyone who has the 12" single of 'Lost in Your Eyes'?? I would like a copy of it if possible. I tried ordering a copy, but it is out of print in most of the US. Q. Brian Peebles (PEEBLES%GRIN1.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU) I have a question....in one of her videos, I think it was "Staying Together," there was someone who juggled, and also (I think) rode a unicycle....I could be wrong on some of these details, I don't watch much TV, but if this is correct, does anyone know who this was? I got the feeling it was a band member (maybe the sax player?) Does anyone know? A. The details are correct. There was a segment in Deborah's "Staying Together" video where her saxaphone/percussion band member rode a unicycle and juggled. That person was Adam Tese and he is a veteran of the Out of the Blue and Electric Youth tours. He is tall in person. Q. Brian Peebles (PEEBLES%GRIN1.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU) Another question....in the back issues, there were several references to Debbie once trying out for _Les Miserables_....what part was she "up for" and what ever happened with that??? And it was also said somewhere that she loves that musical, etc., and I'm curious whether she has considered doing any songs from it or any other musicals. From _Les Mis_ there are several that would lend themselves to her voice/style (esp. "On My Own" and "I Dreamed a Dream," if anyone knows the show). I know she prides herself on writing her own stuff and all, but I think after 2 albums (almost 3...) and innumerable other credits she has proven herself and none would doubt her musical or artistic integrity if she did some songs that weren't original. A. Taken from Deborah's own words in her autobiography _Between the Lines_: The only time that I ever lied about my age, was when I was fifteen, and I was at the audition for Les Miserables. For the role I tried out for, Eponine, they wanted a "legal eighteen-year-old," and they didn't know my age. The producers were interested in me until they asked my agent my age, and then it was all over. But, I did get called back three times for that role. I would really still like to perform that role someday. I know that there is going to be a movie version of that, and I'd love to play Eponine in it! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= CLOSING REMARKS According to Ray Wilmott (wilmott@remus.rutgers.edu), Deb is scheduled to be on ABC's Good Morning America next Monday morning (at least according to the NY edition of TV Guide). If submissions continue to pour in, we will release a second November issue. This will be the first time two BtL issues are released within a few weeks of each other since the beginning of BtL (not including the last two issues of BtL volume I). In December, we intend to release an issue early so that everyone can bring BtL home to enjoy for Christmas.
