My name is Doug Rambo and I am a Sophomore Computer Science / Geology student at the University of Delaware. It is pretty funny how I came to like Debbie's music. All through High school (class of 88) I never really listened to the radio or watched a lot of tv because I was/am a ice hockey player/fan. Then one day in August of '87 when we were on our way to vacation up in Maine I awoke from the back seat of our car and the walkman was still going strong on a local FM station. Anyway, they were taking requests and the person asked for any song by Debbie Gibson so the DJ played ONLY IN MY DREAMS. This song caught me by surprise and I really enjoyed it. Needless to say, I started tuning around when that was over looking for another station that might be playing it, but that just wouldn't be. When I asked my sister if she had heard of her, she said "Where have you been? Debbie has some cool songs for a girl her age." Then she went on to tell me that Debbie and I are the same age (but I'm only 28 days older) and about other songs that she sings. I was impressed to say the least. The next thing I know, vacation is over and it was back to school. That meant a lot of homework, more hockey practice, and less radio and TV. So I had to ease up a bit and put Debbie on hold for a while (What was I thinking?). Our story resumes in the summer of 1989 when I heard that she was going to be at Bally's Grandstand in Atlantic City, NJ on July 31, and the Spectrum in Philly on August 1. The next thing I know I'm asking my sister who works security for certain concerts if she'll be working any of Debbie's shows and she said "yep, the one in A.C." So I asked if she could get me a ticket, and she said that I'd have no problem getting a seat. Well, July 31 comes along and I find myself standing on the boardwalk by Bally's watching them check the sound system. At 6:30pm I'm in line being smuggled through the gate by security, no questions asked. Come showtime, security found me a seat 11 rows from the center of the stage in a sellout crowd (about 3500 people). At the end of the performance I came so close to catching her hat that she threw into the audience. It was almost like she threw it right at me and I would've had it if the guy 2 rows behind me didn't leap over me and come up with it. Oh well, no use crying over that now. Since then I have just been looking around for all the information I can find on Debbie and I just recently came across a message about BtL on rec.music.misc posted by Matthew Jung. Needless to say I bit the hook and joined the list immediately. That's it from here. I can be contacted by any of the following ways. US Mail: PO Box 126 Internet: rambo@sun.acs.udel.edu Claymont, DE 19703 Phone: (302) 798-4163 See ya "Between the Lines." Doug =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DEBBIE IN MUSIC EXPRESS From: Henry Lee (userhlee@cc.sfu.ca) Date: Sunday, June 10th, 1990 / 1405h PDT (copied verbatim without permission) MUSIC EXPRESS June 1990 Volume 14 Issue 148 page 34 - "EXPOSED Regional Reports" : NEW YORK written by Tina Clarke (2nd paragraph down) "... At the fifth annual NEW YORK MUSIC AWARDS, DEBBIE GIBSON nabbed three --- Best Female Pop Vocalist, Best Video and Song of the Year --- winning as many as Lenny Kravitz and De La Soul, but taking home fewer than Michael Bolton, who won four. Overall, Gibson's collection of those crystal monoliths --- she's got nine altogether --- looks like it's starting to rival Henry Mancini's accumulation of Oscars." " Perky as ever, but dressed in a very sophisticated navy jacket trimmed in rep piping and wearing an impressive pearl and rhinestone peace symbol necklace, Gibson was enthusiastic about her current endeavors. She's just completed production on a record for Australian Jo Beth Taylor --- including one track she co-produced with Jellybean Benitez. ``It's really interesting because I feel I can understand it from an artist's point of view when I'm producing someone else,'' she said. ``I try to get them really involved so it's really their album in the end. I've been having a blast.'' In between producing other artists, Gibson has found the time to record about 20 of her own songs. A follow-up to her `Electric Youth' album is expected to be completed by year's end." =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ON-LINE "BETWEEN THE LINES" AUTOBIOGRAPHY From: Raymond Michiels (raymond@cs.vu.nl) Date: Tue Jun 26 00:14:56 1990 Fellow BtLers, Believe it or not, but it has only been a few weeks ago since I first read the official 'Between the Lines.' Ivo Kroone lent me his copy and have to say it really looks good! And - to make a long story short - I really want to have an on-line copy so I can browse through it quickly. (As Matthew wrote we: also very handy for quotes!) A quick computation led to about 24 hrs of typing (at >120 chars per minute) for a total of over 170kb of data. Personally I don't feel like 24 hrs of typing but with a little help from my friends (you!) we can work it out. So, here's the plan: I will coordinate all work. Anyone who would like to type a single chapter of the official Between the Lines should tell me how much they are willing to type (nr of pages) and I will make sure that no two people are typing the same page. When everybody is ready I will stick everything together and release a raw and an nroff-ed version. ('raw', so people with access to UNIX troff and a laser printer can print their own copies, and 'nroff-ed' for peo- ple who don't have access to the forementioned hard- and software.) If their are any questions, please say so, and furthermore: even if your time is limited, please help. A small number of pages multiplied by a large number of people is also 170kb, so please drop me a line (Subject: BtL help) and tell my how many pages you are willing to type. I will try to respond ASAP and tell you what you should type. Thanks in advance, -Raymond. Addendum: To guarantee a uniform style we need some rules. If everyone who lends a hand sticks to the following rules it would save me lots of time. The following rules do not generate troff input but they're easy to memorize and easy to convert to troff commands. If you don't know what troff is, don't worry. Keep in mind the following rules and everything will be OK. Thanks. - Leave a blank line between each two paragraphs. Don't indent new paragraphs. - Use `` and '' for begin-quote and end-quote. - Use underlines to indicate _italics_. You can also _italicize a whole sentence_. - Never type two adjacent spaces, dashes, or anything else unless they're explicitly present in the book. - When in doubt insert [[ bla bla ]], where 'bla bla' explains exactly what you doubt about. I will search your text for [[ and provide solutions when necessary. - Type EXACTLY what is written. Use the [[ and ]] to enclose personal remarks. Please be accurate! It might take you a little bit more time, but I want a reliable verbatim copy. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= U.K. BOOK REVIEW From: Steve Burstall (hnr_443854@emunix.emich.edu) Date: Monday, June 11, 1990 / 1813h EDT Book: "Debbie Gibson" - - - - - - - - - Another book has come out talking about our beloved Deborah. Well, its not really a biography, it more like a scrapbook with a lot of beautiful pictures (many of her EY tour) and a brief history of her (way short of those in "Between the Lines" and "Electric Star"). The book was texted (as they called it) by Susan Black and she did a fine job at that. Many of the questions were copied from past articles of Debbie and some even original. It's not that hard to find out. Now the brunt of the book are photographs that were mentioned before. The cover is a re-release of a picture with her in a "corset". This picture was first seen two years ago when the reviews were coming out in the music mags. This cover is also a pull-out poster. Besides that, there isn't much in the way of new material we already knew about Deborah. Except throughout the book there are quotes from from Deborah. Here's one which I think is new to us and bears us to know: "I read my horoscopes most days just to see if they match up ... But then, I bet they can apply it to millions of people. I often ring up the 'phone horoscope', and I must confess, I sometimes wear my lucky color if they advise it." And let us not forget the "Playboy" incident. Yes, that was even mentioned here: "I would never pose for 'Playboy'. My mom would kill me. Well, maybe I would if it could cure all the starvation in Africa, but that's all. My mom would still kill me for saying that!" Now for some fun facts that weren't mentioned in either of the books (at least I didn't see them): Diane had entered Deborah in a teenage beauty pageant. (Deborah states ...) "It was an appalling experience. The worst bit though, was having to wear my swimsuit next to all these girls who were the size of toothpicks. I don't think I'm fat, but I felt fat next to some to them. And I didn't win that either." That's it for review. All in all it was well done for a scrapbook. I would highly recommend it to any and all members of BtL as an addition to their collections. Right now this book is only available by special order in most bookstores (I think). But I will put the address of the American company that will distribute it so you can all contact your local bookstore to order it. Here is the ordering info for that U.K. book: "DEBBIE GIBSON" ISBN: 0-7119-2146 / Order #: OP45830 Copyright (c) 1990 Omnibus Press (England) U.S. Distributor: MUSIC SALES CORP. 225 PARK AVENUE SOUTH NEW YORK, NY 10003 I did have the 800 number so you can get a hold of them for information, but I forgot it. If you really want to, you can e-mail me and I can send you all of the information. SHORT TAKES I : Atlantic Records threw a party for DEBBIE GIBSON Sept. 10 at New York's Hard Rock Cafe after the second of her three Radio City Music Hall sellouts, Sept. 9-11. Following a warm welcome from the label's top brass (Ahmet Ertegun, Doug Morris, Sheldon Vogel, et al), Gibson and a bunch of pals had lots o' fun dancing the night away. Guests at the bash included Quincy Jones (what was he doing there?) and Conti Mundi, whose upcoming projects include a solo album and the launch of a new Manhattan nightclub. Incidentally, Gibson's set at the music hall earlier in the evening was most impressive. A bundle of energy on stage, she put on a thoroughly professional performance that warranted more praise than lines like, ``Not bad for an 18-year old ...''" (hear hear ...) Billboard Volume 101 #9 - March 4, 1989 page 61 VIDEO TRACK (along side with Picture Caption) "THE EYES HAVE IT. Video director Jim Yukich and Atlantic star Debbie Gibson hang out in New York's Central Park during the shoot for "Lost in Your Eyes", the debut single from Gibson's ``Electric Youth'' album." Deborah is shown wearing the "warm winter" outfit (with hat, scarf, coat and furry white mitts) as per the LiYE video. And speaking of "Lost in Your Eyes" ... Billboard Volume 101 #10 - March 11, 1989 This was the week that "Lost in Your Eyes" was #1 on the Hot 100 Singles chart for the 2nd of 3 weeks and the album "Electric Youth" went to #1 on the Albums chart. This marked the FIRST EVER for a TEEN FEMALE artist to have both #1's simultaneously. The last teen solo artist to achieve this was Stevie Wonder about 25 years ago. RECALL ... that we've just passed one of her numerous milestones. Deborah received her first #1 single according to Billboard when "Foolish Beat" topped the Hot 100 singles chart on the week of her high school graduation (week ending June 25, 1988). It *has* been two years ... It is a rather cheap looking English station, which broadcasts using a dual language system, so I do not have a stereo copy of it. The entire show lasted for 3 hours. A raw copy, showing only the parts in which Debbie appeared has a total time of approx. 16 minutes. I will professionally re-edit the entire show in a few days, so if there are any PAL users out there: I can get you a copy which will only show the parts in which Debbie appeared. I can supply you with copies of my re-edited show on VHS, Betamax, V8, U-Matic BVU or (normal) U-Matic tapes (I doubt that there's anyone able to use U-Matic tapes, but if you do, you can be the proud owner of a studio quality copy of Earth '90). I was rather surprised at Debbie showing up in a show that was broadcasted in Europe because she's very unknown around here. There was only one announcement about the show, and Debbie was only standing besides the presenter (in fact there was a nice girl standing next to the presenter, looking like Deb, so I decided to watch the show. When it seemed that it really was Debbie, I immediately called some people in a studio, so it would be recorded in superb quality). I think it's nice to see Debbie again, since the last time she was on a Dutch music programme was in 1986! (Foolish Beat). Not one single from the EY album reached the Top 40 in Holland. UK CD singles The CD singles of EY, LIYE and WCBT are still available in the Netherlands. It seems that they're very rare in the US. If anyone would like to have them, please send me some e-mail, and I will see what I can do for you (Matthew has a detailed list of these CDs). A NEW ADDRESS Like my article in the last issue of BtL said, Ronald is in the US now so I lost my email access. But I met my fellow Dutch Debbie-freak, and since that moment I use his account (thanks Raymond!). To contact me, use Raymond's address (raymond@cs.vu.nl) and use "ToIvo" as the subject. Since that date will mark the day Debbie leaves her teen years, I would like to ask everyone to participate by sending in submissions. A BtL member brought up a great idea for a contest. The moderators will form a panel to decide which article was the best among BtL issues 2.1 to 2.6 (articles written by moderators are exempt of course). We will announce the winner in BtL 2.7 and the winner will win an 8x10 photo of Debbie Gibson. So, fire up your word processors and submit those articles! There is more confirmation concerning the release of the Electric Youth concert home video. According to a recent issue of Billboard, it will be released sometime this summer after June. Since it is now July, be on the lookout for it. Submissions reviewing this home video will be greatly appreciated. Ana's new single will be "Angel of Love." Since Debbie wrote and produced a third song for Ana not available on the album, it might be wise to check the record stores to see if it was released on the B-side of this single. Please respond to Steve's poll regarding whether you believe Debbie should release a single or double album this coming winter. You can mail your vote in to Steve at (hnr_443854@emunix.emich.edu).
