I've gone through most of chapters, and glanced through the rest of it. My guess is that someone else wrote the summary on the back of cover (i.e., "five number one singles all before she graduated from high school There is a section in the bio. that looks like it came from BILLBOARD and had accurate descriptions (i.e. Top Five singles...) So the back was probably just an exaggeration....not to say that this may be untrue, though. Everyone that has read this book calls it "garbage." I totally DISAGREE. THIS BOOK IS GREAT!!! It is soooo awesome. It is like the culmination of EVERYTHING! Randi R. did an AWESOME job! There is no way we could have written a better account than Randi composed (sure you can sit back and criticize easily now that it's already been done....) but the WAY Randi got her information seems just as or even MORE reliable than from what we've been exposed to. For BETWEEN THE LINES, since Debbie is narrating this, we should take a step back and judge the reliability of the narrator. DID EVERYTHING HAPPEN THE WAY DEBBIE RELATES TO US?....or is it the way she PERCEIVED it? Sure, we know that Debbie provides first-hand account. But, Randi makes ELECTRIC STAR just as VALUABLE because she interviewed and reported from the people surrounding Deb, Diane, her managers, DOUG BREITBART! The detailed accounts are GREAT! There is no way "we" could have gotten these accounts from ALL those people. Randi did excellent research. Did you notice that in the prefix there was 'thanks' to "a few whose names will never see print." Perhaps Randi dug a little on the "shady" side! This is the only place that I have ever seen mention the STAR SEARCH 'reject' account told. Also, the fact that Diane hated her job, and Joe sacrificed a management position at TWA for Debbie + daughters. And the account Debbie gave in BTL of the securing of the record deal was nothing compared to ES. And also the promotion of OIMD to get it on playlists (Joe making 2000 letters for TWA employees, etc)....Debbie failed to mention any of this! Deb did say that her parents sacrificed for her, but I was never aware of the EXTENT that they went for the Gibson girls. What are the "gross inaccuracies" that people have referred to? I also noticed that in the future section.... they list for the "immediate future": a LIVE album !!!! and this was listed BEFORE a "third studio album." I bet the LIVE album was supposed to keep her fans happy while she was busy filming SKIRTS. I hope they still release it. If Debbie's determination for SKIRTS is even half as much as it was for her recording contract, then I see NOTHING standing in Debbie's way. Debbie is AWESOME! - Amin =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= INTROS, APPEARANCES AND EDITS Friday, March 23, 1990 Henry Lee (hlee@cc.sfu.ca) >From issue V2#1, Steve Burstall asked the readers to submit introductions, of how members joined BtL. Last summer (1989), I was a member in a BITNET newsgroup called ALLMUSIC at the AUVM node. ALLMUSIC as far as I can see is very similar to USENET's rec.music.misc. et al., especially with regards to much disdain for Debbie Gibson, the person and the music. By "accident", someone mentioned "other" mailing groups about more specific interests and (under their breath) they mentioned BtL. Excited at the prospect of expanding my horizon (and coming out of the "closet"), I contacted Michael Scheele who was moderator at the time. In September, he accepted my "membership" and I made a really long blurb in the combined issue of #9/10 last year. Anyhow, the timing of it all which coincided with Deborah's concert here in Vancouver on Sept. 1 helped me along to become a "core" fan. Recently, Deborah appeared on the People's Choice Awards from Universal Studios in Los Angeles (Sun. March 11/90). She was a co-presenter for the "Favourite Male Vocalist" category and the "Favourite Female Vocalist" category. It was a little strange being a co-presenter in the very category for which she was nominated. To no one's surprise, Paula Abdul won and gracefully accepted the award by saying that she "shared" the award with Debbie. In the last issue (Vol2 #1), there was a spelling error. My article entitled "DEBBIE IN THE NEWS"; Fri., Feb. 23/90 mentions the MuchMusic News program FAUX. Well, actually, that's a "faux pas" because it's spelled "FAX". Hope nobody knows Moses Znaimer, the president of MM/CityTV. :-) "I won't give up 'til I'm Satisfied ..." Henry Lee (DGIF 6491 Canada West) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= INTRODUCTION FROM DAVID VESSELL Sunday, March 11, 1990 David L. Vessell (drdave@bucc2.bradley.edu) Hello.... Interesting newsletter, although somewhat skeletal at the moment. Here at 'The Studio' (my apartment) I'm surrounded by a modest collection of DG paraphenalia, which draws a lot of ribbing from the rest of campus. Do I care? Well, the stuff is still up, isn't it? I really haven't had much motivation to collect more stuff, since I'd be hard pressed to find anything that could top what I consider one of the ultimate souvenirs: By virtue of fourth row seating, I am the proud owner of Ms. Gibson's stage towel, complete with makeup stains (Natural Wonder, I would assume). Let's see ya top that. That, by the way, was obtained at her August 18, 1988 concert at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, MO. DG is one of my sole variations from my regular music collection, which consists mostly of progressive dance music (Erasure (Vince Clarke is my musical idol!), DM, Wire, et al) and industrial music (Nine Inch Nails is great, Trent Reznor is a musical god). I'm not thrilled by Debbie's taste in music listening, but that's her prerogative, as long as she doesn't abandon her current style and go metal herself (ala Fiona). Some comments on Deb's music: The good news is that I'm glad she took the initiative on EY in doing a lot of stuff herself. I noticed that "Hopelessly In Love" was done almost single-handedly by her. The bad news: Get rid of Zarr. Too much of a Madonna influence. I'd like to see her link up with Mike Jay (who produced Martika), or maybe some of the more progressive producers around like Flood or Stephen Hague. Deb needs to keep an eye out front of the music scene or she'll end up just another relic of the '80s. I also question the wisdom of rushing out a third album too soon. While OOTB splashed in a big way, EY was a letdown of sorts. A glance at the peak positions of the EY singles may suggest a building backlash. "Electric Youth", "No More Rhyme", and "Silence Speaks" all stalled [Editor's Note * "Silence Speaks" was never released as a single] in the Top 20; "We Could Be Together" (which I think is the best song on the album) didn't even break the Top 40. It seems that no one in the media has anything nice to say about her, in spite of the fact that compared to most artists in her same league, she's much more of a musician than any of them. I also sense that Deb is almost consciously avoiding sexuality of any sort, or anything that makes her come across as 'adult'. If all she can write about is teenage love, that's gonna undermine her reputation as a musician. Debbie should do a little better job of avoiding the temptations of mass marketing, or next time around the attacks on her are gonna make the assault on NKOB look like a four star review. Just some thoughts to generate some discussion. Personal e-mail is invited; I can be reached by mailing drdave@bucc2.bradley.edu. This is a lot of typing; if this mail bounces, I'm gonna cry.... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SUBMISSION FROM TIM HU Friday, March 23, 1990 Tim Hu (timhu@csvax.csc.lsu.edu) It's difficult for me to come up with anything submission-worthy during this lull in Debbie's career (between albums and concert tours); however, in support of the newly established triumvirate over at BTL headquarters, I managed to dredge up a few thoughts I'd had. I really like the idea of rotating moderators. I think that it will keep the forum fresh and not overload one person all the time. The premiere issue looked great - very informative and light-hearted - and I'm sure future issues will only get better. In response to the favorite video poll, my choices are 1) Out of the Blue 2) Lost in Your Eyes H) No More Rhyme It's no accident that my two favorite videos coincide with my two favorite songs, although, in my defense, I feel that in both cases the videos 'lived up' to the songs. The 'No More Rhyme' video was actually better than the song, which was quite good to begin with. One final comment : I think it was extremely 'unclassy' for the People's Choice Awards (I believe) to have Debbie present the award in the category she was nominated in. It's bad enough if they didn't know who would win, but I think that they did know (witness Bill Cosby's awards, among others) and that makes it indefensible. Sure, it would've been nice for her to present the award to herself, but Paula Abdul was almost a lock in the category anyway; so, they should have reassigned Debbie to present an earlier award. Tim Hu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= REVIEW OF "ELECTRIC STAR" Thursday, March 15, 1990 Henry Lee (hlee@cc.sfu.ca) The back of the book may have been quoted from another chart that is obviously not Billboard nor Radio & Records. Whatever the case is, it's probably not an OUTRIGHT lie, a pretty severe exaggeration as Amin suggests is a possibility and of course, it may also be true. Gotta leave that option, too. The loss in objectivity in "Between the Lines" is certainly something that we have to keep in mind while reading the book. Perspective and perception from another person or persons "close" to her are just part of the prescription here. The one thing that drove me nuts while reading "BtL" was that (as one or some or all of you have said at one time) it seemed like the words were taken literally at verbatim, spoken to a tape recorder and copied out! In any case, E.S. does mention a lot of things (Amin's mentioned some of them) that BtL does not. Dare I say, any overlap would be in E.S.' favour! The accounts from "all those people" are there and in good "numbers". While they may be "good" accounts, they do not necessarily have to be "true" accounts. Remember, ya gotta take a large grain of salt to everything you read. To counter Amin's statement "' ... some names will never see print.' Perhaps Randi dug a little on the "shady" side!", how about the entirely logical possibility that Reisfeld dug a little on the high and good side and decided not to include that either! Sure, a little more dirt under the fingernails will sell a few more copies by percentage .... However, Amin also mentions in E.S. of the numerous sacrifices the Gibson's, especially the parents, undertook to launch Deborah (& her sisters) into her career. Perhaps the "live album" mentioned could've coincided with the release of the EY tour on video. And speaking of which, it's supposed to be out in the next 2,3,4 months (as per DGIF 2#2)? And lastly, you've suddenly found a new excitement (awesome, you say) with her. What ever happened to "tearing her to pieces"???? Vancouver's BtL Hitman rep =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= POLL SURVEY FROM RAY WILMOTT Thursday, March 17, 1990 Ray Wilmott (wilmott@topaz.rutgers.edu) My votes for the video poll: 1. Foolish Beat 2. Lost In Your Eyes Question for the group: The last issue mentioned that MTV never showed the We Could Be Together video. Was it ever shown on other video shows (e.g. - Friday Night Videos, etc)? Can anyone give a synopsis of it? It was also mentioned that a compilation of Electric Youth videos is due to be released - anybody know *when*? -Ray =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- INTRODUCTION BY JONG LEE Monday, March 26, 1990 Jong Lee (lee3%husc7@harvard.harvard.edu) Hey everyone, After reading about a dozen issues of BTL, I guess it's time for me to introduce myself as well. I'm Jong Lee, a prospective Comp Sci concentrator here at Harvard U. The first song from Debbie that I heard was "Shake Your Love" and didn't like it at all. But "Out of the Blue" was much better, and after "Foolish Beat", I bought the album, which was great, and the EY album made me a diehard fan. It's just fascinating that she wrote and produced these songs herself, at that age. Her voice seems to be getting a lot better with the new album as well. My favorite songs are (in no particular order) Lost in your eyes Out of the Blue No more rhyme Who loves ya baby Foolish Beat I became a BTLer quite by accident. After I got here, I was playing around with the timesharing system when someone told me to try the usenet. In the alt.rock-n-roll section, I caught a notice by Michael Scheele saying that he was having trouble sending out the BTL issues. He sent me the first 8 issues of BTL (which took me most of the night to go through), and more recently, saw Steve's notice on the usenet. Unfortunately, everything I hear or read these days about Debbie is pretty negative (except BTL :-) ). Critics categorizing her as a typical teenage all-glitz-no-talent product, bad concert reviews (most people there want to see Donny instead???), etc etc... you name it. And the Boston music stations have basically stopped playing any of her music; except for the record store singles sections, it's even hard to tell what she's released by listening to the radio. And when I went to pick up her biography at a bookstore, guess whose biography was there instead. Yep, the New Kids. But I take comfort in the fact that they'll be gone in a few years, hopefully. I don't think I can take another Christmas with a song like "This one's for the children" playing all the time (by the way, does anyone remember Debbie singing "Silent Night" a couple of years ago for WPLJ in NY? Has that ever been released?). Well, I'm hoping to see Debbie in concert someday soon. In the meanwhile, feel free to write to me about Debbie or anything else. Collins. Even though I'm classified as a Sophomore, this is "more-or-less" my Junior year because I went to night school for two years before coming to CSU. My primary interest in computers is high performance graphics and animation, as well as some Artificial Intelligence. I am really trying to learn about animation because I would like to write my own flight simulator. None of the ones I have tried are good enough for me. By "good enough" I mean "realistic enough," they don't behave quite like a real jet, the animation is too slow, the scenery is really bad, etc. This is mainly due to the limitations of the hardware right now, but I figure that when I get out of school the hardware will be good enough for me to make a real attempt to write a good program. I also like a wide range of music, from Pop and Rock to Classical and New Age. Some of the top groups I like are Manhiem SteamRoller, Billy Joel, Def Leppard, Jimmy Buffet, and of course Debbie Gibson. I really admire and respect Debbie for the way she is handling her career. >From writing the music, to producing it performing it, she's also involved in every aspect of her career. I played trumpet for eight years from fourth to twelfth grade, was always in the top bands of my schools and was a member of the marching band the first two time my high school won State Championships. For a while I really thought I wanted to write and perform music, so I took, began to take, a class in music theory. After two days I realized I was hopelessly unable to write music, so dropped the class and took something easier, Digital Electronics. I still play my trumpet for fun and entertainment, but I'll let someone else write the music. If there is one thing wrong with Debbie's music, it's that she doesn't add enough trumpet parts in her songs. I'd be more that willing to play the parts if she needs someone to do so. I must admit being prejudice toward the trumpet, and I probably have about as much chance of playing in her band as I do of walking to the moon and back, but I'd still like to have the chance someday. I don't know what being a Debbie fan is like in the rest of the country, but here in Colorado, it seems that all the fans are either under 15 or hidden. I've taken no end of kidding from my friends and their friends about being a fan of Debbie's, especially in light of the "Debbie Does Donuts" shop here in Ft. Collins, some of you may have heard about that. But that doesn't bother me, my room-mate likes Molly Hatchet, and I give him all sorts of stuff about that. I also noticed something kinda fun when Debbie came to Denver on tour. When I looked around the auditorium, it was filled with 7-16 year-olds and their parents, probably seventy five percent of the audience. Then there was probably twenty percent people my age, 20-25. The remaining five percent were fans of Bros, the warm up band. Boy was the audience cold to them. I only saw about ten people having a good time while Bros was playing, I heard a few up in the balcony level having fun, but they were far outnumbered by the people who were trying not to go deaf before Debbie performed. There was even on guy a couple of rows behind me who would shout for Bros to leave the stage every time they would stop playing for a second. When the Intermission came around, a lot of the people started to leave to get fresh air or whatever, all of the parents were complaining about how bad the band was and "I don't know why I let your mother/father talk me into taking you here", until they started playing music while the stage was being reset. As soon as the Billy Joel started coming through the speakers all the complaints died and the almost the whole crowd began to sing along and dance to the music. The only ones who weren't happy were the kids who couldn't go to the restroom because mommy and/or daddy wanted to listen to the music, a lot of them apparently had never heard or learned to like Billy Joel yet. >From the Intermission on the concert was great. Everyone including the parents liked Debbie's show. Although I had only been to one previous concert, and all the marching band competitions I participated in, I have never seen so many people get so charged up at a performance before. It was kind of nice to seen that many people that energetic and "happy." I think I would be one heck of a concert if they had Billy Joel and Debbie Gibson performing, wouldn't miss that one for anything. I will admit that I didn't like Bros at all, and would have rather been to a shorter concert with just Debbie, or if they would have had another band instead of Bros. The last time she was to come to Colorado she was touring with Ice House, I think that would have been a good concert too, better than Bros at least. I'd like to hear other peoples impressions of the concert as well. I can be E-Mailed at: Mathis@Handel.CS.ColoState.Edu or regular mail. campus address: 775 W Lake St, #C-302 Ft. Collins, CO 80521 hone address: 228 Conestoga Rd Franktown, CO 80116 Unfortunately I'll be going back home in a few weeks since the school year is ending, but hopefully CSU will keep my account open so I can log in from home to check e-mail for any news. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= FAVORITE TWO DEBBIE GIBSON VIDEOS Wednesday, March 14, 1990 Henry Lee (hlee@cc.sfu.ca) To summarize first the nine Debbie Gibson videos : "Only in My Dreams", "Shake Your Love", "Out of the Blue", "Foolish Beat", "Staying Together"; "Lost in Your Eyes", "Electric Youth", "No More Rhyme" and "We Could Be Together" 1st - OUT OF THE BLUE (*** 12 inch club mix 5:50 ***) .... yes, it's true, there is another version to the OotB video. This extra version is not played to the LP cut but to the first cut from the 12 inch. It really is a "dynamic" video and impressed on me just how much better I find the song is now than before. Just a fabulous, fabulous video ... The images are very much similar to the "regular" video but the club mix version is much more indicative a dance song. 2nd - WE COULD BE TOGETHER .... this baby got very little video (and radio) play. Consequently, this video (& the song) did not get overplayed as per high or even medium rotation. As such, every time I see the video, I "see" something new. The video remains very much as a "fresh" view as the first time. Looking forward to read all of your "votes" ... Plastic) going to try to bring things up to date around here. First I would like to thank everyone for all the submissions for this issue. As the current moderator I had great fun putting BtL together and will again be doing it 5 months from now. At this time I turn the helm over to Henry Lee (hlee@cc.sfu.ca) as the new moderator. As many of know, this is the first anniversary of BtL and there is a lot of things going on that the world does not know about but we try to keep them informed. Secondly I would like to thank Henry and Matt for their help and input into these issues. Without them, I would have missed a lot of the errors and this would have become....well, just a bunch of words. Let's get things a little straightened up here. There was a poll taken about favorite video. This is tough on the grounds I have only seen the videos up to _Electric_Youth_ and don't have much of an idea about the rest. Anyways it's no matter, here's my ranking: 1) Out of the Blue 2) Foolish Beat Now "how did I become a BtLer and Gibson fan". Gee, that's bringing back some very old history. That was 1988, the year of operation. I first became a Gibson fan when I was laid up at home after an appendectomy and all the tapes I had was _Out_Of_The_Blue_. Having listened to this young lady (who I once had an aversion to) I learned to like her music and her. This was the start of something grand. I just couldn't get enough. I then picked up _Electric_Youth_ and found an address for her company and fan club. It actually took me a while to actually join her fan club. To tell you how long, I am number 3132. I also know some people who are in the 600's....that's a long time of waiting. At this same time, the computers here at Eastern were hooked up to INTERNET and USENET. Golly Bob Howdy Vern, talk about the greatest thing thing since sliced bread. I found similar fans in the newsgroup rec.music.misc (actually it was Michael Scheele). I wrote to him and he told me about BtL. I joined. It was great to talk about someone, who is considered dead in this region, and to keep up on the latest news of her. From this medium, I was able to meet and verbally talk to, some of the members (phone bills were quite high thank you). Some I actually consider many friends because of this medium. That's the history of me. Short, sweet and exciting (hopefully). Steve "Plastic" Burstall =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= EARLY SUMMER MODERATOR Friday, March 16, 1990 Henry Lee (hlee@cc.sfu.ca) As one of your three moderators, I would like to express my intentions to the BtL "readership" that I intend to perform duties as the moderator for the "May" and "June" or Vol 2#3 and Vol 2#4 issues. It appears quite likely that I will be employed on campus under the supervision of faculty members in Physics. If hired, I will be doing some mathematical modeling of problems in nonlinear optics. As a result, I will be using the computer very heavily and will retain access to all the "privileges" that go along with computer use. The changes that you will see in following issues should be minor and cosmetic and will hopefully improve the "reading" of a BtL issue. After the "April" (BtL 2#2) issue is released, please continue to send your submissions to Steve Burstall. He has accepted the designation of "receiving site for all future submissions". When the submissions are forwarded to me, I will do my damnedest to acknowledge successful receipt in a short "thank you" note.
