Scheele The "Electric Youth" Tour kicks off at the Worcester Centrum on July 28 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Supposedly, Judsen Spence, an Atlantic Records group, will be opening. Bros will open for Debbie later in the tour. According to a couple of forum members, Debbie will be opening for Bros in the UK. I find this to be a sad state of affairs, but the die appears to be cast... [Editor's Note: The forum is officially neutral on this subject. The moderator's opinion is strictly his own and does not necessarily reflect the views of the forum or its members. -- Michael] She will be performing in Ann Arbor, MI on August 12 at Pine Knob. Information courtesy of Steve Burstall . She will be performing in Madison Square Garden (NY) in September. More details to follow (when I get them). Information courtesy of Ted Young . Debbie makes an appearance in Portland, OR on August 29 at the Chiles Center (University of Portland). Her Los Angeles performance will be on October 18 with the location still undecided (according to GPI). Anybody else who has tour information should e-mail it to me so I can send out tour updates to everyone. Thanks for the help! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tape Poll Results The poll was: Which Debbie Gibson songs would you put on a sixty minute cassette tape? Answers from two forum members and the moderator... From: Dina Shimoyama Date: Wed, 31 May 89 12:59:31 PST In answer to your survey, I would put on a 60 min tape Who loves ya baby? Lost in your Eyes Shades of the Past Foolish Beat Electric Youth No More Rhyme (Acoustic version--I love it!) Between the Lines We Could be Together I guess that's about it. Thanks! Dina Shimoyama From: Matthew Jung Date: Sat, 10 Jun 89 14:43:51 PDT After considerable thought, I have come up with my 60 minute Debbie Gibson tape. The following songs will be recorded on a TDK MA-X 60 minute tape with Dolby C Noise Reduction. SIDE I ------ Staying Together (4:07) Shake Your Love (live) (7:41) [Off "Foolish Beat" UK CD-single] Foolish Beat (instrumental) (4:28) [Off "Foolish Beat" single] Only in My Dreams (3:50) [Off original 7-inch single] Out of The Blue (club mix) (5:50) Silence Speaks (acoustic mix) (3:39) [Off "Lost in Your Eyes" single] The total time on side one will be 29:35. This will leave enough room for 3 second gaps between each song. SIDE II ------- Lost in Your Eyes (3:34) No More Rhyme (acoustic mix) (4:12) [Off "Electric Youth" CD] Foolish Beat (4:25) Only in My Dreams (Percapella) (3:29) [Off "Only in My Dreams 12-inch] Silence Speaks (3:37) We Could Be Together (acoustic mix) (5:33) [Off "Electric Youth" CD] Shades of the Past (4:52) The total time on side two will be 29:42. This will leave enough room for 3 second gaps between each song. From: Michael A. Scheele Date: Wed, 26 Jul 89 23:15:00 EDT This was a difficult process, but I came up with my selections for a sixty minute cassette. "Here we go!!..." SIDE A ++++++ Out of the Blue (3:55) Only in My Dreams (3:54) Love in Disguise (4:17) Should've Been the One (5:07) We Could Be Together (5:33) Foolish Beat [instrumental] (4:28) Total time is 27:34 including 4 second spaces in between songs. SIDE B ++++++ Foolish Beat (4:25) Between the Lines (4:42) Lost in Your Eyes [piano/vocal mix] (3:34) Silence Speaks (A Thousand Words) [acoustic mix] (3:40) No More Rhyme [acoustic mix] (4:12) Shades of the Past (4:52) Only in My Dreams [Percapella] (3:29) Total time is 29:18 including 4 second spaces in between songs. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Singles Poll Results Question: Which songs do you hope will be released from _Electric Youth_ (in order)? Responses so far... From: Darren Troy Kumasawa Date: Sat, 22 Jul 89 15:31:55 PDT Here are my votes for the poll I suggested (and Michael endorsed): The songs I HOPE will be released as singles next (in order): 1) We Could Be Together 2) Who Loves Ya Baby 3) Silence Speaks a Thousand Words 4) Helplessly in Love Of course, they won't release 7 songs from the album (not very many groups have) but then this poll is just for fun. I can see maybe two more songs being released realistically. [Editor's Note: Michael Jackson is the only artist that has released that many songs off of a given album; well, at least recently. -- Michael] From: Michael A. Scheele Date: Wed, 26 Jul 89 23:20:00 EDT My choices for release off of _Electric Youth_ are as follows: 1. Silence Speaks (A Thousand Words) 2. Love in Disguise 3. Should've Been the One 4. We Could Be Together 5. Shades of the Past I doubt "Silence Speaks (A Thousand Words)" will be released because it was on the B-side of "Lost in Your Eyes." I could be wrong and in this case, I hope I am. "Should've Been the One" is likely to be released as it is listed on the stickers placed on the album wrappers. "We Could Be Together" is probably going to be the next single released as the video is currently being shot or finished by now. More on this later... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "No More Rhyme" and More From: Matthew Jung Date: Mon, 24 Jul 89 00:45:48 PDT "Busy life, not enough time to look in the mirror..." Apparently, some of you must have responded to the special BTL bulletin asking you to call up those Billboard radio stations that have not added "No More Rhyme." The song fell one notch on the Billboard airplay chart two weeks ago and it was in danger of becoming Debbie's worst charting song. However, thanks to you (the fans), it picked up ten notches on the airplay chart last week and the song rose seven notches to number 23 on the HOT 100 chart! Keep up the good work! If you are a DGIF (Debbie Gibson International Fan Club) member, you may have received a postcard two weeks ago asking you to request "No More Rhyme" on radio as well as video. Again, keep up the good work; last week, the video "No More Rhyme" was the number 3 most requested video on MTV! [Editor's Note: S Lee also reported this. I have received this postcard too. I am glad the song is doing better; it is a fine song deserving of success. Thanks for helping to make it happen. May it go to #1!! -- Michael] You may have noticed that the songs on the sticker placed on the album are a good indication of what singles will be released. If the pattern holds true, which it has for the past three singles, then "Should've Been the One" will be next. However, there seems to be a change in plan. Debbie Gibson was in New York recently to film the video "We Could Be Together." Photographer Chuck Pulin was there to snap a photo of Adam Tese (sax player) carrying Debbie on his shoulders. As if filming a video and preparing for a tour isn't enough to keep Debbie busy, she will work early next year on a musical film, "Skirts," set against the backdrop of the 1964 New York World's Fair. Directed by Danny Ortega (Dirty Dancing), Debs will be playing the lead role and is writing '60s style songs for the soundtrack. [Editor's Note: Raymond Michiels also mentioned this. Debbie will not be singing the songs for the soundtrack as far as I know. -- Michael] With all this, is there a chance that we will hear any new songs, besides the ones used in the soundtrack, written by Debbie in the near future? The answer is yes, but Debbie will not be singing them. She will write and produce three songs on the next album by CBS Records dance-pop artist Ana, from Orlando, Florida. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Introducing Mr. Bond From: Andy Bond Date: Mon, 24 Jul 89 07:26:01 pdt Hello, My name is Andy Bond. No, I don't have any relatives named James. But I do go by 007. I USED to be a college student. I just graduated this past May from Virginia Tech in good old Blacksburg, VA. I don't expect any of you to know where that is except for the ODU people. I am now working for NCR Corporation in Columbia, SC. I have been a Debbie Gibson fan ever since ONLY IN MY DREAMS was released. I am a member of DGIF, but I can't remember my number (300 something). [Editor's Note: You are an early member. My number is 1879. I joined in September of 1988. -- Michael] I have also been fortunate enough to meet Debbie Gibson. I was a member of the Pop Concerts Committee at Virginia Tech. We worked on bringing musical artists to Tech. We brought Debbie Gibson to Tech in the Winter of 1988, after SHAKE YOUR LOVE was released. Our job at the shows included set-up, security, and load-out. My security position was at the stage. She did a great show. After the show, all the committee members got to go back to her dressing room to meet her. She autographed promo pictures for us. She was very friendly. I have worked a lot of shows at tech and she is the only one to do this. Most artists won't even let the student security people backstage. I was very, very impressed with her musically and personally. [Editor's Note: Fantastic! -- Michael] I could go on and on about the show. Has anyone else met her? I am looking forward to her new tour. I look forward to her future musical career. When she becomes a mega-star and is widely accepted, we can say that we were there from the beginning. [Editor's Note: Has anyone on the forum been fortunate enough to see Debbie play at clubs before and around "Only in My Dreams"? -- Michael] Andy Bond (bond@ncrcae.Columbia.NCR.COM) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= An Intro. From Steve Burstall From: Steve Burstall Date: Sun, 16 Jul 89 17:14:01 EDT Greetings Deborah Fans, My name is Steve Burstall. I live in Ann Arbor Michigan and is DGIF member 3132. I have been a member since May and damn it all I missed the first newsletter (or two I can't remember right now :[). if anyone can mail me Xerox copies of them I'd greatly appreciate it. [Editor's Note: I am missing the first newsletter as well. The second had a picture of Debbie from "Staying Together" and the third (the last one I received) had a picture from "Lost in Your Eyes" on it. I wonder if D.G.I.F. offers back issues?] Okay, I didn't become a Gibson fan till around December of 88. (recovering from an illness does that to a person). I also had bought Debbie's "Out of the Blue" cassette. Since it was only one of the few I had with me at the time, I had plenty of time to listen to it and start to appreciate the person who wrote/sang/produce the music. I was hooked. When I got back here to old Eastern Michigan University, I started a massive research about this talented lady. I came up with about 10 articles from major magazines and two from New York Times. Let's say I have a large collection of her at this time. I also have in this collection 2 posters, all the sheet music (up to "Electric Youth") any mailings from her club (still waiting for the next issue) and some misc. stuff. As many of you have noticed I have gone one step further than just letter writing, from the "Electric Youth" album there was the address of her production house. Well with a little help from Ma Bell and her information groups, I was able to get the phone number. With a little help from my friends where I work, I was given the brainstorm of how to talk to her personally (I hope). I tried the lines on her receptionist and she gave me her publisist's phone number and since that time I have been talking David Salidor since. Oh, this started back in April and now I'm on a waiting list......ggrrrrrrrrr! I do have some news from around here in green Ann Arbor. 1) There was a rumor that she was coming to U of M (I know, you guys had the same rumor going at other universities too.). A young man called the radio station here WIQB Rock 103 and asked if this was true. I called the station a week later and them if was false. (Dave told me the truth), and the DJ said, and I quote, "Good!". WIQB doesn't play Debbie Gibson anyways. Many people I find here don't like or respect her. Their loss. 2) Tickets just went on sale for her concert in August (17 of 24). I went to the local ticket outlet and it was dead....hint? Her show is at Pine Knob. $22.50 Pavillion, $17.00 Lawn....I'm going no matter what. That's all for now....until next time.... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments From Darren Kumasawa From: Darren Troy Kumasawa Date: Sat, 22 Jul 89 15:31:55 PDT Michael, Congratulations on another great issue (BTL #6)! I was afraid the quality of material would drop during the summer from lack of participance, but you have proved me wrong. Keep up the good work!! [Editor's Note: The continuing quality of the material is due to input from forum members like yourself. -- Michael] Here's some more random comments... 1) Although airplay and chart-progress for "No More Rhyme" has started out slow, I think it will pick up. I'm sure the song will eventually end up somewhere in the top-5.... I think it is a much better ballad than "Lost in Your Eyes." I don't think the lack of commercial success of the "Electric Youth" single will hurt the commercial chances of "No More Rhyme." "Electric Youth" is my least favorite song off of the album and it is not even that interesting a song to dance to (compared to other songs that have been out recently). Also, "Electric Youth's" lyrics just weren't commercial enough to make it popular. Personally, I think it was a poor choice for a second single (they could have picked another up-tempo song to release between the two ballads) --- it wasn't good enough for people to anticipate the next single. Instead, "No More Rhyme" will have to fight for recognition, a battle I think it will win. 2) I saw the video for "No More Rhyme" and liked it even better than the video for "Lost in Your Eyes" (I didn't really like the video for "Electric Youth" --- the mass dancing was kind of silly). Debbie looks REALLY good in the video... too bad they couldn't use a still picture from it for the single cover (one of the close-up shots would have been awesome!!). Although I don't think it has gotten much airplay on MTV, I do remember it being at #4 on some count-down a couple weeks ago. Anyone know how much airplay it has gotten since then?? 3) Correct me if I am wrong -- Debbie is not smiling on any of the single cover pictures for the three songs released from ELECTRIC YOUTH. Weird, eh? Any comments? [Editor's Note: You are correct, all three singles have featured Debbie without a smile. -- Michael] 4) Just in case any NorCal fans haven't heard, Debbie is playing at the Shoreline Ampitheater on August 24th and Cal Expo (in Sacramento) on August 26th or the 25th. I would suggest buying tickets for the Cal Expo show for any Bay Area fans who haven't bought tickets yet. Shoreline has reserved seats (the best ones have probably been taken) and general admission while Cal Expo is all general admission. The extra drive is worth the better view. That's about it for me. It was filmed at Universal Studios, Hollywood so I thought it would be a good idea to hang around there to see if I could spot Debs! As it turns out, Wil Wheaton was the host of the show and I did see him (nothing to write home about...but he is taller in person!). Too bad I didn't find out about the rumor until later or I would have asked him about it (may have been tough with all those fans of his swarming around him). Anyway, Debbie DIDN'T make it to the show :-(, but she beat out Whitney Houston and Salt 'n Pepa for the Favorite Female Music Artist award! (Yay!!!). During the TV broadcast, they showed a little video clip of Debbie apologizing for not being able to make it; she said she was busy filming her new video. This doesn't make sense, because the "No More Rhyme" video premiered the next day or so!! Now, I figure, if Wheaton was Debbie's boyfriend, she would have tried to make the show. Or, maybe they broke up and Debbie DIDN'T want to see him. Seriously folks, this rumor is probably not true. Debbie is too busy doing promotion, filming videos, and preparing for her tour to have a steady boyfriend. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Steve's Addition From: Steve Burstall Date: Sun, 16 Jul 89 20:13:47 EDT I want to expand on Steve Baylon's LIKES/DISLIKES from #5. A: Darren Troy Kumasawa I've seen one called "Watches" which is kind of like the single cover for "No More Rhyme" except Debbie is smiling and has many watches on. I've also seen one from the OUT OF THE BLUE DAYS. Debbie has her hair up and is holding up the collars on her button-up shirt. Pretty cute. It makes her look really young. I saw this one about a year ago. Debbie is outdoors in front of a tree or something. She is wearing a red flannel shirt and her hair is long and straight. She is smiling and looks very natural and cute. I'm sure there are more. A: Steve Baylon There are about 7 posters plus some promotional ones you can't buy. I have 4 of them. 1 - The Pink Poster ( Debbie was around 16 years old ) 2 - Hawaiian shirt ( Close up shot with a black background - wears a Hawaiian shirt ). 3 - Tan ( Debbie seems to have a tan in this one. ) 4 - Red dress ( an almost full body shot of Debbie leaning against a wall wearing a red outfit and a black hat. ) These posters cost around $4. A: Michael A. Scheele There is the Foolish Beat poster. She is wearing the brown outfit from the "Foolish Beat" video. She is singing with her eyes shut and hands together. I thought it was a good shot. There is also one with her in a grey and white plaid outfit wearing a black hat. As Darren says, I am sure there are more... Q: Darren Troy Kumasawa Anyone know how much airplay it ["No More Rhyme"] has gotten since then [couple of weeks ago]? Thanks! Q: Michael A. Scheele Debbie used to perform in clubs (which she was to young to enter herself). Some of these were in Miami. Anyone see her there or anywhere else before "Only in My Dreams"?
