Listing at $5.95, the CD is housed in a jewel box with color graphics and linear notes." (Extracted from Billboard magazine, Vol. 101, #17, Irv Lichtman Ed.) Since the CD-single format came out, Atlantic has given it the cold shoulder and expressed skepticism at its success. However, because of Deborah, they have reconsidered the marketing potential of this new format! In fact, with such an introduction, they may re-define the size of the format itself. Since 3-inch CD-singles are more expensive to manufacture, the 5-inch CD-single is a logical solution. Not only that, but it benefits from customer familiarity and the ability to hold enough music required by 12-inch vinyl singles. Perhaps if we all buy Atlantic's and Deborah's first CD-single, Atlantic will get the hint and release all her previous 12-inch material on to the new CD-single format. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "Smash Hits" Interview From: Philmon S Baylon Date: Thu, 4 May 89 14:01:27 EDT Subject: DG mail - submission Yo Debbie Gibson Fans, I found this little interview in a magazine called "Smash Hits". It's kinda silly but I figured it might help us get a glimpse of her personality. Hope you enjoy it! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q = Question D = Debbie Q - DO YOU HAVE ANY FAMOUS ANCESTORS? D - There's this guy called Vic Damone who was a singer many years ago. He's my great uncle through marriage. He did a song called "My World Belongs to You" and, er, I can't remember any of the others. Q - HAVE YOU EVER HAD A NICKNAME? D - Well some people call me "Debs" which is sort of a nickname I suppose. And my band, because I'm from Merrick they do this take off of the Flintstones- they call themselves The Gibstones from the town of Merrock and they call me Debbie Gibstone. Q - HAVE YOU EVER BEEN LOCKED IN YOUR BEDROOM WITH A PLATE OF COLD CABBAGE? D - No. But I do remember having to sit at the dinner table with this bowl of lentil soup untilI ate it all. I left it for ages and it got worse and worse the colder these letils got so I cheated a bit by feeding some to the dog under the table. If I was really naughty my parents wouldn't send me to my room, they'd just give me a big long speech and I'd be feeling REALLY guilty by the end. Q - WHAT'S THE MOST MISCHIEVOUS DEED YOU EVER COMMITTED AS A NIPPER? D - I don't know how naughty this is but I remember going on this class trip and they gave us free T-shirts - it was a helicopter trip. Anyway, I treated the whole class to candy and told my mum that I used the money she gave me to buy the T-shirt. I felt so guilty I couldn't get to sleep and I went down to her crying and admitted what I'd done. She said "Oh that's Okay; it's always better to tell the truth". Q - HAVE YOU EVER POKED YOUR GRANDAD IN THE BACKSIDE WITH A SPEAR? D - No, never. But when my mum was younger, she sometimes used to travel on the subway and my grandmother gave her a hatpin in case any old men got nasty with her. She used it once. But I can't say I've ever STUCK anyone with a hatpin. I don't think I've ever done anything really nasty to my grandparents, but I remember once when I was shopping with them in a department store I hid in a clothes rack for about 15 minutes and I was just peering out watching them looking all over for me. They were really scared. Q - DO YOU SOMETIMES THINK IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE? D - DEFINITELY. Basically if you're not a tough person and you're really meek and don't speak up and stand up for yourself, you'll probably never be happy. I'd say I'm a tough person. I used to go off to auditions because that was the only way to get an "appointment". You have to be a bit pushy. If I knew they wanted someone with black hair, I'd go in and say "If I get the role, I'll dye it". It's called crashing auditions. Q - WHAT'S THE SECRET OF THE UNIVERSE? D - How am I supposed to know? I would say the world is a playground and we're all little kids playing around and checking everything out. That's MY attitude in life anyway. Q - WHAT'S BEING IN LOVE LIKE? D - Well, I wouldn't know because I guess I haven't experienced that yet. It'll probably be bad and good because probably I'd have such little time and I'd want to be with the person as often as possible. I've seen some people who are in love who act really stupid and kind of float around all day. But I'm sure it'll be great and I'm sure I'll get a LOT of good songs out of it. Q - WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED? D - I haven't really cried in a while actually. I'm quite a happy person basically. My eyes kinda filled up when I saw E.T. and there's one part in DIRTY DANCING where Jennifer Grey's talking to her father and she starts to cry; that always brings tears to my eyes. I do want to get into films quite soon and something like Jennifer Grey's role in DIRTY DANCING would be ideal for me. Q - IF YOU COULD BE ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD, WHO WOULD YOU BE? D - I'd probably like to be George Michael's hairdresser, then I could see how he gets his beard to look so good. It just looks TOO perfect... Steve Baylon =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Notes from Holland Date: Wed, 3 May 89 15:13:34 MET DST From: Raymond Michiels Subject: submission As a wrote last time, Debbie was coming to Holland to do some promotion for _Electric Youth_ (album and single). When I heard of this I immediately started calling our radio and TV station Veronica. They told me that I had to contact "Rob de Boer productions." They, fortunately enough, told me (violating company rules, but for a good cause) that Debbie was coming over to Holland on April 25. Because I was early (it was something like April 10) I could get tickets to go there. Finally after two long weeks it was tuesday April 25. I left the university early to be sure to be on time for the recordings of "Countdown - Europe's #1 rock show." When the recordings had just begun they told everybody who would appear on stage tonight: "Eros Ramazzotti!" I wondered if Debbie had changed her name to Eros Ramazzotti, but I didn't think that would be very realistic. "HELP!", I thought, "what is going on?" Later that same evening Jeroen van Inkel (who took over presenting Countdown from Adam Curry) told the audience that Debbie Gibson had sent a fax in which she wrote "she was having problems with her electric tooth", so she couldn't be with us tonight. Debbie also wrote she was determined to come to Holland soon, because it would really mean a lot to her, if she would break through in Holland. That was it. Instead of cheering for Debbie Gibson I now had to cheer for Eros Ramazzotti! Well, better luck next time! I will keep calling to check when Debbie *is* coming to Holland and I *will* be there. I just hope my next submission for "Between the lines" is a more happy one! Anyway: don't :-( be :-) -Raymond P.S.#1 Can anybody fill in the missing syllable (*) in the last line of Electric Youth? Catchy, she sounds extremely cute in parts ("...who could ever hold meeeeeeeee") 3) (tough one...) Silence Speaks. Nice sad song, very touching. We Could Be Together loses only because no remixes are allowed. The remix would have been my #3 choice. The first DG song I heard was "Only in My Dreams." I was driving to high school one morning during the fall of 1987, and the song came on WHLM (106.5 FM, Bloomsburg, PA). I hadn't been following Top 40 music for a long time, so I had no idea who sang it. My younger brother--he was a freshman then--told me it was by a new teenage artist. I was really impressed by the song, especially because of her age. (In fact, it was that song and REO Speedwagon's "In My Dreams" [I love the name coincidence] that convinced me to start listening to popular music again.) Soon after that, I saw the "Shake Your Love" video on MTV. I loved it as much as "OIMD," plus I saw that she was an attractive girl (definitely a plus to me!). I bought the album and thought the whole thing was terrific. I was especially impressed when I saw that she wrote all the songs, played instruments on some of them, and did some production. This is what separates her from Tiffany, with whom she is commonly compared. (I like Tiffany, but I feel that Debbie has a lot more talent. [However, I feel that Tiffany is partially hindered by George Tobin, her overbearing manager.]) I haven't bought _Electric Youth_ yet, since I want to wait until I get a CD player this summer. Of course I've heard "Lost in Your Eyes" and the title track, and I think they're both great. I certainly hope that "LIYE" will be _Billboard_'s Number One song of 1989, since I feel that it definitely deserves this honor. As far as this mailing list is concerned, I think that _Between the Lines_ is a great idea. Most of the students here at Carnegie Mellon--except for Norman Eliaser, a _BTL_ subscriber (hi, Norm!)--don't take Debbie seriously. This is probably because they regard her as bad simply because she has hit songs, which seems to be a negative factor in college ratings. And I've already learned lots of stuff from reading the first three issues. The best thing that I've found out so far is that Debbie and I were born on the same day: 31 August 1970. So now I have even more of a reason to celebrate my birthday! Before I conclude my introductory posting--which is already too long--I want to say a few things about myself. I'm a freshman at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA), and my hometown is Lewisburg, PA, a small town in central Pennsylvania (Bucknell University is there). Right now I'm planning on majoring in Logic and Computation, which is kind of a psychology/computer science/philosophy major. As far as music is concerned, I of course like Debbie Gibson, although I don't regard her as one of my favorites. (I don't feel I can call her a favorite after only two albums.) I like just about any kind of music, but my favorite artists are (in no particular order): the Beatles, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Steely Dan, Billy Joel, and Bob Dylan. I guess that's about enough for this time. I'll try to post some trivia in my next message. David J. Anyway, it's great to be a part of this mailing list/newsletter! On to the "alcoholics anonymous"-type stuff... =) I became a fan of Debbie's the first time I heard "Only In My Dreams". I was a high school senior, and in a band at the time, and I was trying to write some new material. (We played songs by The Cure, The The and Simple Minds at the time, and I was trying to come up with similar stuff.) Anyway, I was with my sister and a group of her friends when this song came on the radio. My first reaction was "yeah, uh-huh... okay... catchy melody, ..." I tried to catch the words and I thought to myself, "if only I could write like that..." I mean, she has a way of putting the words together. That's why I admire her. That's why I'm a fan. It may seem stupid, but that's the way it is... I've already sent this in, but anyway here it is again -- my three favorite Debbie Gibson songs: 1) Only In My Dreams 2) We Could Be Together 3) Silence Speaks (A Thousand Words) Well, that's about it. Now to catch up with my "Between The Lines" reading... thanks for hearing me out ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: "Between the Lines" Date: Wed, 26 Apr 89 12:36:16 EDT From: Michael A. Scheele I realized that I have not really introduced myself to the forum yet: I remember hearing "Only in My Dreams" when it first came out and did not think much about it at the time. I later heard "Shake Your Love," liked it, but again did not think much about it. Then, early 1988, one of my roommates started to play _Out of the Blue_. It did not take too long for grow on me. She appeared in Filene's in Boston spring of 1988 to sign autographs, but I was only able to catch a glimpse of her hat; the crowd was very big. I saw her in concert in Portland, Oregon; she was fantastic. I was impressed by her incredible singing voice, her energy, and her new songs. When I got the CD of _Out of the Blue_, I was even more impressed. She sounded better live than on CD! This cannot be said of most artists. The energy was higher and her voice smoother. I joined D.G.I.F. fall of 1988. Starting May 12, I will be the moderator/editor for "Between the Lines"... Michael In response to Raymond Michiels' question: As final questions: does (and did) Debbie also write all lyrics for all her songs, and has she ever written anything for other artists? Answer: Yes, she wrote the lyrics for all of the songs off of _Out of the Blue_ and _Electric Youth_. She did write a song for some obscure artist whose name eludes me. I have a copy if anyone is interested; the lyrics are similar to those of songs off of _Out of the Blue_. She had written "Who Loves Ya Baby" for Olivia Newton-John originally, but she decided to record it herself. I don't know the full story behind this; does anyone out there know? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Sandy Matthews Date: Thu, 27 Apr 89 09:31:36 BST Dear Electric Youth, HI! Sorry I took so long to get back to you, but I`ve been otherwise occupied with work. But better late than never, I suppose. Well, I suppose you want to know about me. My name is Sandy Matthews, and I`m at Glasgow University, Scotland. I first heard of DG a few years ago, when a friend of mine, who gets cable TV, said "You`ve got to see this Debbie Gibson video, she's gorgeous, oh and the song's not bad either". I didn't agree with either, though. The single flopped here, but "Shake Your Love" was a hit, and so was "Only In My Dreams" when it was re-released. On hearing "Out of the Blue", however, aI was knocked out, and rushed out to buy the album. And I've been a fan ever since. I got "Electric Youth" the day it came out, and it's great too, but not as good as O.O.T.B. One thing, however, is that I think the song "Lost In Your Eyes" is AWFUL, the worst thing she's done. Judging by the other comments in the mailing list, however, I appear to be a minority of one here. The title track was released here last week, and was a new entry at #33, higher than "Lost..." ever got. As for the above friend, he has gone off DG a bit, since he saw the cover of EY, and says she has got knobbly knees. Having said that, he has had my copy of the first album for about six months now, and I'm suffering withdrawl symptoms! Well, that's about it from this side of the Atlantic. I'll keep you posted aboout anything I hear over here, and look forward to hearing from you. Lots of love, Sandy Matthews. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Edmund Fong Date: Thu, 4 May 89 10:53:07 PDT Subject: article Hello fellow Debbie Gibson fans. My name is Edmund Fong (DGIF 356). My best friend Matthew Jung (DGIF 587) and I have been die hard fans of Debbie since the very beginning. Here is a brief story of how it all began for us. It all started when Matthew and I heard "Only in My Dreams" on the radio back in the summer of 1987. He did not know who sang the song, but we loved the beat. In a short time, we discovered that it was sung by a 16 year old named Debbie Gibson. I was hooked on the song and wanted to buy the 7-inch single immediately. However, I could not find it at anywhere. It took about five weeks before it was finally available. I quickly bought it without hesitation. Several weeks later, Matthew saw a segment of her on "Entertainment Tonight." He told me that she has a studio set up in her garage. He also told me that she writes her own material. I was impressed by this talented girl and wanted to know more about her. One night, I was home watching "Top of the Pops" and Debbie was a guest. She sang "Shake Your Love" and I liked the dance choreography. She mentioned that the song would be on her debut album "Out of the Blue." The title, I thought, was very catchy. I went to sleep with the intention of buying "Out of the Blue" right away when I see it at the store. On August 31st, I went to Tower Records to buy Michael Jackson's "Bad" since that was the debut day. While I was there, I also saw "Out of the Blue." I was excited. Thus, I bought it. I did not discover until months later that I had bought her it on her 17th birthday. Matthew and I listened to the debut album together. I particularly liked "Out of the Blue" and Matthew liked "Foolish Beat." We both agreed that the 7-inch version of "Only in My Dreams" is far better than the LP version. That is basically how it began. I respect Debbie a lot. Debbie's talents and wholesomeness have attracted me. Matthew and I saw her in concert on August 5th 1988 at the Concord Pavilion. She was fabulous. We were not fortunate to get good seats because the tickets went on sale unexpectedly and we almost had to settle for the sky seats. We can't wait to see her again. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Questions & Answers Date: Fri, 28 Apr 89 21:13 EDT From: "Andy Tefft (814) 862-6728" Subject: 50's??
