Just stopped by my local "Wiz" store (big electronics/ music chain here in the northeast). Every month they put out piles of their free "Beats" magazine, and this months cover story is....you guessed it. So here are just a few random tidbits gleaned from the article..... * Highlight of her career thus far - "getting to perform with two of my favorite artists, Elton John and Billy Joel, actually at the same time at Madison Square Garden". (alright Debbie - 2 of my own all-time favorites are EJ and BJ! :-) * Why she thinks Electric Youth is a better album than Out Of The Blue - "On the first album, I wrote the songs between the ages of 13 and 16. Now I'm 18. Obviously you go through a lot of changes, and also my singing has gotten stronger" * What does she consider her best song recorded to date? " 'We Could Be Together' is, along with 'Lost In Your Eyes', probably one of the favorite songs I've written" * Earliest inclination towards a musical career? When she was 2, she asked for a guitar (and got a ukelele). * Other musical training/background? DG began piano lessons at age 4, and won her first competition at age 6. By age 13, she had been with the Metropolitan Opera's Children's Chorus for a few seasons, and around that time landed a few spots in commercials (hmmm...anybody know for which products???) * First album she ever bought? Billy Joel - 52nd Street at age 8. * First concert attended? Billy Joel at Nassau Coliseum at age 9. "Ever since that day, I knew exactly what I wanted to do..." * Future plans/ambitions? "I'd like to win a grammy, produce other artists, act in films, finish the screenplay I'm writing, and record a duet with Billy Joel" * Final notes...it seems that TriStar Pictures just signed a contract with Debbie for her to star in a film "developed especially for her". Also, Revlon is negotiating to market a fragrance called "Electric Youth" exclusively through record stores... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "Spin"-ing with Michael Scheele Date: Sat, 08 Apr 89 23:29:43 EDT From: | Michael A. Scheele -- MIT '91 Internet : pershing@athena.mit.edu I found a positive review of _Electric Youth_ in _Spin_ magazine. I am not a regular subscriber, but I happened onto this article by chance. _Spin_ April 1989, p. 106 copied verbatim. With _Electric Youth_, Debbie Gibson blasts away from those Tiffany comparisons and, in a quietly subversive way, sends a primal message to a frightening new demographic--the _adult_ children of baby-boomers. That's right. School's out for Debbie. She's 18, and she likes it. It's time to say goodbye to teen vacuity and welcome the hormonal challenge of those early child-bearing years. As she sings on "Lost In Your Eyes," "I get weak/In a glance/Isn't this what's called romance?" Hidden inside they chirpy, MIDI-ized backing tracks is an insurgent message that will have a greater emotional impact on current culture than a truckload of Tracy Chapmans. _Electric Youth_ is an album of mobilization, a good girl's guide to leaving the nest. "All those people caring/Yet you're still alone," she explains on "Who Loves Ya Baby," "I understand what's behind the feelings/I think I know you better than anyone." Like a Rainbow Brite Pied Piper, Debbie's ready to lead the adult offspring of the love-generation "Over The Wall" to a "new world waiting." It's time to "ignore the world's advice" and get together for "a while." As for those baby-boom parents, Debbie reminds them to give their kids some room. "In the 60s young people were fighting to be heard," she writes in the liner notes, "Today, children are still struggling to voice their opinions." What makes this message even more mutinous is that Debbie has dared to buck the obligatory use of cover material. She's pushed platinum the hard way, by writing her own songs. This admirable feat--poking a hole in the median-crossing compost heap of ageless pop fodder--makes _Electric Youth_ an important statement. By deliberately excluding covers, Debbie's dared to do what Art of Noise and Henry Kaiser couldn't--get radio play with original compositions. Instead of building her success on record sales, Debbie's banking on her publishing. In today's music biz, that's a seditious approach. "Don't underestimate the power of a lifetime ahead," she warns critics and radio programmers on the title track. "Don't lose sight of potential mastermind/Remember when you were young." But it would be impossible for radio to ignore Debbie. Either on her own, or in conjunction with arranger-producer Fred Zarr, she rings the cash register of mass-market radio, sounding sometimes like a young Olivia Newton-John and at other moments ("Lost In Your Eyes") like a hybrid of Karen Carpenter and Barbara Streisand. No doubt, she's headed for some serious royalties. She has the potential to write that universal ballad and in a unique turn of events, people may eventually cover her material--perhaps helping to perpetuate the very trend she's fighting. -- Rich Stim I find the tone somewhat condescending to Debbie sometimes, but all in all it was a postive review. Some of the points have a good deal of merit. It is good that not all of the music publications hate her. I have not seen the _Rolling Stone_ review yet; I hear it is only partially positive. That is par for the course given their tastes. Any comments on the review? It is quite a collection, so I will list the 7-inch singles I have in this issue, and the 12-inch singles in a future issue. Some of the singles are hard to find these days, and they may be out of print. I have marked these with a (*). All singles are from Atlantic Records. 7-inch singles -------------- ONLY IN MY DREAMS (7-89322, Released 2/87) (*) Side A - Vocal. This is the original version of the song that was released on radio. Debbie's voice is clearer, and less percussion is used. This single is FAR SUPERIOR to the one found on LP/CD. (3:50). Side B - Dub. Debbie's background singers hum some of the tunes from the song. (4:42). SHAKE YOUR LOVE (7-89187, Released 9/87) (*) Side A - LP version. (3:46). Side B - Badd Dub Version. Mostly improvisation from Debbie's band. Debbie voice is not present. I don't like it. OUT OF THE BLUE (7-89129, Released 1/88) (*) Side A - LP version. (3:55). Side B - Dub Edit. Same as LP version, but with out any vocals! Great to sing along to! (4:12). FOOLISH BEAT (7-89109, Released 4/88) Side A - LP version. (4:20). Side B - Instrumental. (4:28). STAYING TOGETHER (7-89034, Released 8/88) Side A - This version is different from the one on LP/CD in that Debbie sings over a dub of her own voice! It is this version that was released on radio. (4:15). Side B - Dub Edit. This is the version of the song that Debbie sings over on Side A. Great to sing along to! (4:30). LOST IN YOUR EYES (7-88970, Released 1/89) Side A - LP version. (3:34). Side B - Acoustic Mix of "Silence Speaks". Less percussion used; thus, the song sounds more stronger/emotional. Not available on LP or CD! Who says turntables are worthless? (3:39). ELECTRIC YOUTH (7-88919, Released 3/89) Side A - LP version. (4:55). Side B - Campfire Mix of "We Could Be Together". Same as CD bonus track. Don't have a CD-player? Get this!! (5:33). ONLY IN MY DREAMS/SHAKE YOUR LOVE (7-84928, Released 1989) This is a re-release of Side A of the first 2 singles in the "Atlantic Oldies Series" format. If you haven't heard the original version of "Only in My Dreams", get this!! OUT OF THE BLUE/FOOLISH BEAT (7-84929, Released 1989) This is a re-released of Side A of the 3rd and 4th singles in the "Atlantic Oldies Series" format. If you have the LP or CD of "Out of the Blue", don't bother. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Videotaped Material Date: Sun, 2 Apr 89 18:16 EDT From: "Andy Tefft (814) 862-6728" Sandy asked about other stuff that people taped pertaining to Debbie... At home (not here, for I have no VCR here) I have a 'Debbie Gibson Memorial Tape.' Yes, I know it's a misnomer, but that's what it's called. On it: Whatever videos I could catch off MTV Debbie and Kurt Loder doing "The Week in Music" on MTV, and they happened to do an interview with several music personalities asking about their 'first sexual experience'. Back into the studio, Kurt asks Debbie if she has anything she'd like to say on the subject. "Ahhh, no..." The 25th b'day party for Atlantic Records (off CBS, sorry, no VCR to tape the HBO version), not much of Debbie in here, but some still. Something MTV aired about a 'behind the scenes' look at that concert, includes an interview with Debbie and her rehearsing "Staying Together" I've seen the video of videos (convinced a friend to buy it) and it wasn't really exciting, but nice having the 4 videos all in one place, and the interviews were kind of nice too. Now..... I absolutely love the song "Staying Together" but only heard it on the radio a couple times and never saw the video. But I noticed that what was played on the radio was different from what's on the cassette... not as good. Is this the only song that's like that? I don't hear enough of her music on the radio to be able to tell. Who says she's overplayed?? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The Mojo Nixon Song Date: Sat, 1 Apr 89 18:50 MST From: SOREN@CC.UTAH.EDU Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper have indeed done a song about Our Debbie. It's entitled "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child", and it's on their brand new album (whose name I've forgotten). I haven't heard it yet, can anyone give a review? Nobody has ever accused Mojo of having anything like good taste: previous efforts include "Stuffin' Martha's Muffin" (about MTV VJ Martha Quinn), "I'm In Love With Your Girlfriend", "I Ain't Gonna Piss In No Jar", and his "hit" "Elvis Is Everywhere", and this seems about par for the course. soren@cc.utah.edu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Pick Quote of the Week "I'm looking forward to being 19, the 'coolest age'. Scheele -- MIT '91 Internet : pershing@athena.mit.edu Here's some Deb trivia that some of the readers might find interesting: If you read the liner notes of _Out of the Blue_, you may have wondered who Rachel Cooper (whom Deb dedicated the album to) is. The answer that follows is provided courtesy of GPI (Gibson Productions Incorporated). "Regretfully, this is a sad story, but another example of Debbie's caring and generosity. Rachel Cooper was a girl with whom Debbie was briefly acquainted. Rachel suffered from a heart ailment from birth and passed away in June of 1987 (she was 13). Debbie decided to dedicate her LP to this brave girl whom she liked and admired. In addition, Debbie has donated the proceeds of one of her summer concerts in New York to the RACHEL COOPER FOUNDATION, INC. -- an organization created to research and fight heart disease in young people." A friend of mine at USC, Amin Kamadoli (who unfortunately does not have access to the net), sent me this info. in response to my inquiries. The beauty of Deb's character is immeasurable and my respect for her increases once again. It's really a pleasure to know that there are fans of Debbie's out there. I really enjoyed the first issue. The informations about Debbie in the first issue was very enlightening, especially the article on her songs( contributed by Micheal of MIT ). When I first contributed, I didn't really introduce myself and the reasons I liked debbie... so here goes. My name is Philmon Steve Baylon( friends call me Steve ) and have been a Debbie Gibson's fan since she first came out with 'Only in My Dreams' ( was it around 3 years ago?). After that, she became my favorite singer :-). I am still awestruck at the amount of talent that girl has! She writes her own songs, co-produced it, as well as sings it. WOW! Now that is what I call talent! She could dance too, which was demonstrated in that new awesome video 'Electric Youth'. I know for a fact that she was an honor graduate in high school, which implies that she has intelligence as well. She is an ambitious female who quote "I hate the word 'can't'". Another reason I like her is that she is also family conscious. I believe, in her video 'Electric Youth', that her family was included. Isn't those two girls playing piano in the video Debbie's sisters? How about the little boy? Anybody know who he is? I developed a crush on her when I saw first saw 'Foolish Beat'. When 'Lost in Your Eyes' came out, it prompted me to write a poem for her( on the first issue--major embarassment). However, I think she would appreciate it. Questions: 1)How many brothers and sisters does she have? 2)Any of you know when she will have a concert in Virginia? 3)Are female shoe sizes different from males? 4)I need more posters of her, how many are out? Those large sizes not the ones from teen mags. I have two of them- one with her in a white shirt and the other in a Hawaiian shirt. Steve (baylon@cs.odu.edu) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Matthew Jung (ccs013@castor.ucdavis.edu) Date: Fri, 7 Apr 89 14:45:58 PDT Hello fellow Deborah Gibson fans. My name is Matthew Jung (DGIF 587). My best friend Edmund Fong (DGIF 356) and I have been her fans since the beginning. Here is a little story about how it all started: Ed was driving me home in his brand new 1987 Ford Escort GL when "Only in My Dreams" came on the radio. This was in either late June or early July and I had just graduated from high school and was enjoying my last free summer. Since I had been working on yearbook all year, I was totally un-informed when it came to what was on the pop charts. I had heard this song before, but had no idea who sung it and I thought it probably already peaked and was falling on the charts. So, I turned to Ed and asked if he knew who sang it. He said he didn't know, but he liked the song. I told him I liked it too. A few weeks later, he and I were already bored to death and were playing monopoly with his little brother. We were listening to the radio at the same time and "Only in My Dreams" came on again. Finally, when it was over, the DJ actually said her name. We thought, "Debbie Gibson?" Isn't that such an ordinary name? So, to try to remember her name, we thought of Mel Gibson because we had just rented Lethal Weapon. We would then go to the record stores every day to find her single. Unfortunately, she would always be out of stock. Even as it peaked, the single could not be found anywhere. Several weeks later, I was at home, watching "Entertainment Tonight" and they did a story on young-teen singers. They showed her dad mowing the lawn and excerpts from her video "Only In My Dreams." I thought she looked pretty attractive and I am glad that was my first impression. Ed, on the other hand, didn't get such a good first impression because Tower actually had the single stocked (it was beginning to fall on the charts already) and it has one of the worst photos of her I have every seen. Ed thought she looked old and didn't like her hairstyle. Much later, Ed and I found out that Atlantic wanted to make her look older and it wasn't her fault. Ed and I were thrilled because we finally got the single after searching for so long. Later, Ed was at home watching TV and she was a guest on Top of the Pops and she perfomed "Shake Your Love." It was a couple of weeks before her album debut, and she mentioned that she was releasing an album. From that day on, Ed was hooked and he became a fan. On August 31st (Debs B-day), Ed went to Tower Records to buy Michael Jackson's BAD since that was the debut day. Ed didn't have a CD player then, so he was looking at the cassette section. Then, out of the blue, he found Deborah's tape sitting on the shelf. It wasn't on sale and sold for almost ten bucks, but he bought it anyway. I think he must be the first person in Stockton to buy her tape, and it wasn't until months later that he realized that he bought it on her birthday. The day after he bought her tape, he came over my house and I dubbed it. On September 2nd, I sat down and listened to the entire thing carefully because Ed and I were talking the day before I didn't have a chance to really pick out the songs I liked the most. On that day, I picked "Only In My Dreams," "Foolish Beat," "Play the Field," and "Between the Lines." The only thing that has changed since then is that I started to like "Out of the Blue" because it grew on me and "Staying Together" because I didn't appreciate it until she released the yucky overdubbed version as a single. So that is how it all began. I have never been so fond of an artist before. Perhaps it was her talent and down-to-earth personality that attracted me. Debs has worked hard since she was a tiny tot and we are now beginning to see the pleasant results. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The Ultimate Trivia Test From: Matthew Jung (ccs013@castor.ucdavis.edu) Date: Thu, 6 Apr 89 19:09:19 PDT Fellow fans, here is a two part puzzle to test your Debbie Gibson trivia. We don't know, but DGIF members receive tour schedules for their area. Re: Was the door slamming in 'We Could Be Together' a glitch? It was intentional. Debbie sings "It could be another closed door" just as the sound is heard. In the concert video, she waves her hand in a door closing motion as she sings that part.
